GLOBE Is Part of the NASA International Space Apps Challenge!


The NASA International Space Apps Challenge is an annual hackathon for coders and creators to design solutions to Earth and space challenges. The event will be on 5–6 October 2024. This year, one of the 20 challenges is the GLOBE Protocol Games, in which students create games that integrate GLOBE protocols. You can join the challenges through the links above.

GLOBE South Africa Trains New Teachers

A teacher training workshop in South Africa was held 21–22 August in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape. The workshop included 63 teachers, most of whom drove 90 minutes each way to attend.


Planetwalk and GLOBE Africa

Dr. John Francis is continuing his collaboration with GLOBE Africa for his Planetwalk across the African continent. Starting this month, Dr. Francis will walk from Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, to the Botswana border. Along the way, Dr. Francis and those who join him will use the GLOBE Observer app to make daily observations. They will also stop at several schools that participate in The GLOBE Program. The first of September marked the start of the GLOBE Asia and Pacific Soil in Schools campaign. The campaign is designed to cultivate a profound understanding of soil among students, planting the seeds of knowledge that will grow into a foundation for sustainable practices.

Student Experience: Expedition to the Sea in Maldives

This event, taking place 24–28 November 2024, aims to bring together students, teachers, and the scientific community from different Asia-Pacific countries to collectively “learn through observation” about issues surrounding Earth's oceans and water systems due to man-made and natural events.

Europe and Eurasia Autumn Phenology Campaign

Running September–November 2024, this autumn campaign offers three short activities designed to guide school teams through the greening-down of trees. Register for the campaign by 13 September. The first webinar is scheduled for 23 September 2024.

The 2024 GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting will be held 11–15 November in Slovenia.

Festival Brings Together GLOBE Students and Scientists from Two GLOBE Neighboring Countries

In June, DAPHNE—The Institute of Applied Ecology (which leads the Slovakia GLOBE Program)—and the Polytechnic School of Jana Antonin Bat'a in Svit, Slovakia, welcomed GLOBE students and teachers from both Slovakia and the Czech Republic to a 4-day festival to celebrate a year of environmental activities by GLOBE students. 


Israeli Students Become Cloud Chasers

Students from across Israel engaged in cloud research this year, culminating in a virtual end-of-year event aimed to provide students from about 50 schools with an engaging platform to present their research projects. This included an active cloud-monitoring activity aimed at simultaneous cloud observation, achieving approximately 300 cloud observations.

Trees Within LAC Campaign's Seventh Webinar Video Available

On 15 August 2024, GLOBE held its seventh webinar of the Trees Within LAC campaign. Thirty-three participants from 12 countries in the region attended this Zoom event.

Two students from the Institute for Natural Resource and Engineering Studies (NATIN) conducted important research on the water quality of the Suriname River, specifically on the impact of urbanization on this important body of water.

During the North America Phenology Campaign, students observe and report plant green-down and green-up, have opportunities to meet scientists, and collaborate with other students. The fall campaign began 1 September 2024.

The 2024 North America Regional Meeting will be held virtually 15–17 October, 1–4 pm ET (17:00–20:00 UTC) each day.

GLOBE Adopted at Two National Estuarine Research Reserves in California

The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) and the San Francisco NERR are working together to spread GLOBE throughout the NERR system.

Congratulations to the authors of the paper, “Integrating Global Citizen Science Platforms to Enable Next-Generation Surveillance of Invasive and Vector Mosquitoes," found in the Insects special issue “Citizen Science Approaches to Vector Surveillance,” which received the “Insects 2022 Best Paper Award” for research and review articles.
