A Note About GLOBE’s COVID-19 Data Dashboard

Congratulations to the GLOBE community for a great first week of hybrid instruction! We've gone one week without any COVID-19 cases on either campus - let's see how long we can keep this going! Community transmission is no longer declining and has leveled off; it remains incredibly important to stay vigilant: keep wearing those masks over your mouth and nose, wash your hands well, and keep your distance from those who aren't in your usual pod.

As you may know, Georgia is opening COVID-19 vaccination to everyone aged 16 years and older beginning Thursday, March 24th. You can head over to the Georgia Department of Public Health's website to find vaccination locations or schedule an appointment. Widespread vaccination will be key to reducing transmission in our community - if you have questions about the COVID-19 vaccines, you can find answers to common questions here.

Question: We are not planning to travel during Spring Break, but will be visited by our grandparents who are all fully vaccinated. Is that considered a situation where they would need to stay home after Spring Break?

Answer: If your only new exposure will be a small number (e.g. up to 4 people) – who are all fully vaccinated (including the 2-week period after receiving their last dose) – this would not be considered increased exposure that would lead to a child being asked to stay home after spring break.

Important Communication for Grades 3-8

Dear Parent or Guardian:
Please see the communication below from the Georgia Department of Education.
Recently, the Georgia Department of Education received guidance from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) regarding assessment, accountability, and reporting requirements for the 2020-2021 school year.
The good news is ED is inviting states to request a waiver for the 2020-2021 school year of the accountability and school identification requirements in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This waiver will provide flexibility from several aspects of accountability reporting that have concerned many amidst the pandemic. Once the state receives additional information and the waiver template from ED, Superintendent Richard Woods will pursue all flexibility available to the state of Georgia and provide districts with additional information on that process.
Unfortunately, ED will not waive the federal testing requirements for 2020-2021. Therefore, districts must proceed with administering federally-required assessments this spring. Among other information provided by ED, the communication the state received noted that “certainly, we do not believe that if there are places where students are unable to attend school safely in person because of the pandemic that they should be brought into school buildings for the sole purpose of taking a test.”
Therefore, no virtual students are required to attend school solely to participate in the Georgia Milestones, ACCESS and the Georgia Alternative Assessment (GAA), if they do not feel comfortable doing so due to the pandemic.
State Superintendent Woods has worked to reduce the high-stakes nature of testing this year, including the State Board of Education approving his recommendation to reduce the weight of Georgia Milestones EOCs to 0.01% of students’ final grades and by directing school districts with flexibility contracts to use input from teachers and parents, placement committees, class performance, and formative tools instead of Georgia Milestones to make student promotion/retention decisions. The state has also waived the summative TKES evaluation for 2020-21.
State Superintendent Woods will continue to pursue the maximum flexibility available to ensure districts’ ability to prioritize the health and safety of students and staff. If additional information is provided, you will be notified.
If you have questions regarding any aspect of testing, please contact the school at (470) 355-4422.

Progress Reports
Progress reports for the third quarter were sent to parents and guardians via email on Friday, March 19. Please reach out to one of your child’s lead classroom teachers if you did not receive it. Please check your email account’s spam or junk folder first.

School Arrivals and Departures
Please remember that students must enter and exit cars during morning arrival and afternoon pick up via the passenger side.
**During first, second and third-grade pick-up in the afternoon, please do not attempt to get in line from Sundown Drive. This is not fair to the parents who are waiting in line farther down where Heritage Drive turns into Meadowvale Drive.

Carpool Tags
By Monday, March 29th, ALL cars arriving for afternoon pick-up will need to clearly display the official GLOBE carpool number tag. Carpool numbers do not change from year to year. If you are a returning family, you should already have a tag. Tags for new families have already been passed out. But if you have not already received it, please email frontoffice@theglobeacademy.net

Lower Campus Lost & Found
Families, the Lost & Found from the 2019 - 2020 school year (pre-COVID) will be donated over the spring break holiday. If there is an item that has special meaning to you and you believe it was left at the school prior to March 2020, please email lclostandfound.globeacademy@gmail.com. Please provide a detailed description of the item. Unfortunately we can not search for items that do not have your child’s name clearly labeled. We will do our best to locate any items that are labeled and contact you regarding pickup.

Upper Campus

Change for UC dismissal beginning Monday, March 29
In an effort to shorten the afternoon carpool line, Upper Campus will begin allowing walker pick-up on Monday, March 29. Families living within walking distance of The GLOBE Academy will be able to walk onto campus, come to the double doors facing Briarcliff Road, and pick up their students on foot. Parents picking up their students will be expected to model appropriate mask wearing and physical distancing while on campus, and will assume full responsibility for safely crossing Briarcliff Road at the traffic light. Students will only be released to a parent/guardian or other authorized adult listed on school paperwork. ID will be required.
