Reopening Update

Dear GLOBE Community,

We are writing with an update to our Return-to-Campus Plan.

The GLOBE Academy plans to reopen for hybrid in-person instruction on March 15, 2021. Students in grades K-8, whose families have chosen the in-person option, will be assigned to one of two cohorts, and will either return to school on Monday or Thursday of that week. You will receive an email about your student’s Hybrid days from their homeroom teacher by the end of the day Thursday, March 4. At this time, the hybrid days that are assigned to your student may not be changed. *For an explanation of the Hybrid Learning Model, please see page 5 of the Reopening Playbook.

As our Reopening Committee has continued to monitor GLOBE’s COVID-19 Data Dashboard and the improvements across the five pandemic indicators that we have been tracking, we are encouraged that the numbers will continue to decline. These numbers, considered in conjunction with the other aspects addressed in our Venn diagram, have led us to move forward with plans to bring students back into the building.

GLOBE Faculty and Staff returned to campus March 1 to prepare for this transition. Also, please note that The Reopening Playbook has been updated to include information for Middle School students and can be found here.

A plan or timeline for returning to in-person learning four or five days a week has not been determined. However, for our plans to be successful in the hybrid reopening, we strongly encourage everyone in our GLOBE community to do their part to reduce spread of COVID-19 by by practicing the three Ws — wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance.

If you have any questions, please take a moment to review all of the information provided via the Reopening Playbook, in our Parent Sessions and on The COVID Corner. If you have further questions, please feel free to email us via our website or submit general queries via the The COVID Corner form.

Question: Please revise the shared table layout to provide at least 6 ft separation at a table to mitigate transmission risk in the classroom, particularly when students/staff are unmasked during lunch and to reduce the number of students in the space; the divider on the tables are only maybe 6 ft in length. A recent CDC MMWR publication of a transmission cluster at a GA elementary school implicated practices including improper distancing and classroom layout and eating lunch in the classroom https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7008e4.htm?s_cid=mm7008e4_w
Answer: Every effort will be made to maintain 6 feet of physical distancing in the classroom – however, there may be some instances where the classroom tables are not quite long enough to achieve this amount of distance. To reduce the likelihood of transmission during lunch, students will maintain their distance and will be asked not talk while eating. Teachers will provide an audio/visual distraction to help discourage talking. After the eating period, students will have an opportunity to engage in informal, masked, and socially distanced conversation with their peers.

Question: During the Return to school update for 3rd grade, I have a concern. I read that kids will keep masks on at all times, lower mask to take a bite and pull mask back up to chew. I’m a neurosurgery nurse practitioner and am well educated on cross contamination. If a student has any viral contamination on their mask, they will be cross contaminating their hands while they are actively placing food in their mouth with each bite. I’m am definitely pro-mask but have real concerns of masking while eating.

Answer: We apologize for this miscommunication – students will not wear masks while eating.

Question: I see on the COVID Update in the weekly newsletter that the "Cases per 100k" are in the red "Above GLOBE's Threshold". What exactly is GLOBE's threshold for this? Please quantify this.

Answer: While we provide a summary graphic of the pandemic indicators in the newsletter each week, please remember that you can access the full details using GLOBE’s COVID-19 Data Dashboard. These data are an important component of our reopening framework; however, we are also taking into account student wellbeing and the community context. As you can see on the dashboard, GLOBE would like to see the 14-day cases be at or below 175 per 100,000. However, this marker alone will not be a determining factor in when to initiate hybrid instruction.
Face Masks, Please

As we prepare for a potential return to campus, an attention to correct mask-wearing is imperative. Please practice with your children.

> All students and staff must wear proper face masks on campus. They should also have a spare face mask with them. GLOBE Trot buffs cannot be used as masks.
> Students who are not wearing their mask properly will be gently corrected and coached on the importance of this behavior.
> If students willfully decline to wear their masks correctly, they will besent home to engage in virtual learning for a period of time. Their parents will also need to participate in a conference with the head of school.

Chromebook Troubles?
Is your student having trouble with his/her Chromebook? We have recently installed a new extension that will help to monitor and clean Chromebook CPU and RAM usage. If your student is having trouble getting or staying connected to classes, or finds that new tabs just keep “loading,” please check this extension for more information. If the memory and CPU usage is close to 100%, try restarting the Chromebook and opening fewer tabs at a time. Reach out to Mrs. Limor (jlimor@theglobeacademy.net), if you need a service appointment.

Virtual Language Field Trip for 8th grade

Eighth grade students will have the opportunity to participate in a full-day language immersion program hosted by Concordia Language Villages on Friday, March 5. You received information from Dr. Hertz and the 8th grade team to remit payment for this “trip”. This payment is due by Friday. Please make sure you have completed the registration form for your student in order to select class options for the event.
Connections (at LC)
To meet what we see as a growing need for our GLOBE students to connect with one another and address certain aspects of the virtual learning environment in a positive way, EACH connection teacher will include Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) content in their lessons from March 1-9, the length of one full rotation. Sample SEL topics could include: being self-aware and relating to others, dealing with anxiety/worry, and practicals on how to be kind and why it is more important now. We are proud of and impressed by how your children continue to manage through the challenges of virtual learning and we are excited to connect with them during Connections next week!
