GLOBE students connect with Chinese students in unique learning opportunity

Late in the evening on Thursday, January 13, students from The GLOBE Academy connected with Chinese students from the Chongqing Shapingba No. 1 Experimental Elementary School. This cultural language exchange was sponsored by the exchange and travel program, Peng You. The online meeting connected GLOBE students, via Zoom, with students in Chongqing, where the local time was 9am the following morning.

GLOBE students gave an introduction of our GLOBE language program in Mandarin. In return, Chongqing Shapingba No.1 School students presented their school, city, and cultural Lunar New Year celebrations to GLOBE students. An introduction by GLOBE student, Jaycee Villalobos, can be listened to here.

Students shared stories about what they like to do during their winter break and the differences in the amount of vacation time the two countries enjoy. Chinese students have around three to four weeks off during winter for Lunar New Year. All students respectfully participated and shared in both English and Mandarin. In between, there were ice breaker games like tongue twisters in Mandarin and English.

Part of GLOBE's Strategic Plan focuses on the development of authentic cultural exchange opportunities that connect students of the same age around the world. This year, 8th grade students will be piloting such opportunities.

We are honored to participate in genuine cultural exchanges and to provide unique cultural learning opportunities for our GLOBE students.
