DID YOU KNOW that coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), magnesium, and 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) deficiencies may be associated with fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms?

The objective of a Journal of Dietary Supplements study was to assess the effects of CoQ10, 5-Hydroxytryptophan, and magnesium supplementation in patients with FM. The single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-period, two-sequence crossover study included adult patients diagnosed with FM for at least two years.

Pain intensity significantly decreased in both groups, while sleep quality and functional impact showed a significant reduction in the dietary supplement group. The total fatigue score improved significantly after 3 months of receiving the dietary supplements.

Steve: Those who are taking Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1) like Ozempic and Mounjaro are not meeting the daily reference intake (DRI) for several vital micronutrients and macronutrients through their diet during weight loss.

Participants in a Frontiers in Nutrition study had insufficient intakes of several key micronutrients below the DRI, including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, choline, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E.

Participants overconsumed calories from fat and saturated fat. Participants did not meet the daily recommended servings for fiber, fruit and vegetables, and protein intake was significantly under daily needs.

This leads to common side effects for those taking these medications: bone loss and skeletal muscle loss.

This case report concerns a group of female clients with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Their individual needs always differ, but the impetus for a consultation is very much the same. Many come to see Steve and Bonnie because they are concerned about their post-DEXA scan diagnosis, concerned about taking bone drugs, and want to know if there are alternatives.

The first thing they explain is that DEXA scans only assess bone mass. If you have a small frame, you are very often categorized with osteopenia right off the bat. However, unless the DEXA scan is accompanied by a trabecular bone score (TBS), which is very rare, there is no assessment of bone quality. Bone quality is just as important as bone mass. Many women with good bone quality and less bone mass never fracture.

If a DEXA with TBS is not available in your area, there are two blood tests to assess how well you are forming bone and resorbing bone to ascertain bone quality. If needed, we can lay out the possibilities for building, maintaining, and preventing breakdown of bone. In most cases, there is so much that can be done with diet and lifestyle. For the rare instance where medication is the only option, we know how to help you minimize the negative effects.

"In 2021 I did a DEXA bone scan and was told I had Osteoporosis in (left femoral neck). My doctor at the time prescribed weekly dose of Alendronate (a bisphosphonate). I did it for about a 1.5 years. I’m happy to report that I had a follow up bone scan at Northwestern yesterday and it came back with NO Osteoporosis at this time. So there was no regression from stopping the Alendronate med and switching to the supplements. In fact, the diagnosis changed from Osteoporosis to Osteopenia.
