NEW - Resident/Fellow Leaders Needed on Campus and Health System Committees

We have exciting opportunities for you to get involved and shape the future of our institution. Several campus and health system-wide committees are still seeking resident/fellow members. If you did not get a chance to sign-up for a committee, please consider joining one of the following committees.

Committee representation is an excellent opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the growth of our institution while honing your leadership and teamwork skills.

If you have questions about committees, please contact Jocelyne Jam. Please sign up for committees by Friday, June 30th.
Want To Improve Your Patient Communication?

When we deliver an excellent patient experience, patients are more likely to understand and follow their care plan, leading to better outcomes. The most important driver of patient experience is outstanding communication. Trainees have so many competing interests to juggle and it is often difficult to find time to sit down with patients and families to hear their stories and address their concerns. We have developed the Caring Behaviors modules to review some important communication strategies that will allow you to be effective in communication and save time. These modules can be done alone or with other trainees in your program.

Find more information and resources on patient experience here.
Well-Being
NEW - Free Well-Being Index Screening

All UCSF residents and fellows have access to the online Well-being Index, a validated tool that helps residents and fellows understand their overall well-being and areas of risk compared to other residents and fellows from around the country, as well as resources to support well-being. The tool is anonymous and scores are not shared with anyone, including at UCSF. See the GME Well-Being webpage or access the Well-Being Index tool
NEW - Updates to Ginger Therapy Access

We want to make you aware of two updates to using the Ginger app.

  1. All UCSF residents and fellows have the opportunity to connect to a therapist through Ginger without first accessing a coach. Please specify when connecting via text that you wish to see a therapist. If you encounter any barriers to connecting to therapy, please contact help@ginger.com or let us know.
  2. All Ginger therapists are now contracted with Anthem. Once you have used your 15 included (no copay) therapy sessions per plan year with Ginger, you have the option to continue with the same therapist using your health insurance benefit with applicable copay.

For details about additional mental health benefits available through insurance, please review this FSAP-maintained list of practices that have experience working with residents and fellows.
Education and Assessment
Drug Enforcement Administration Training Requirement

Effective June 27, 2023, the US Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will require a new one-time eight (8) hour training requirement for all DEA-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.

Practitioners will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form (for initial registration or renewal) affirming that they have completed the new training requirement. For practitioners who are renewing their DEA certification, the deadline to satisfy this new training is the date when your certificate expires. The following groups of providers are considered exempt from this requirement because they have already satisfied the training requirement:

  • Providers certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry;
  • Providers who have completed previous training to have an X-waiver;
  • Providers who graduated medical school within 5 years of June 27, 2023, and completed at least eight hours of training in medical school.

If you need to complete eight hours of training to renew your DEA registration, there are many online trainings available.

NEW - UC Presidential Policy on Gender Recognition and Lived Name

UCSF is implementing the UC Presidential Policy on Gender Recognition and Lived Name (UC GRLN) to ensure that all employees, learners, patients, and affiliates are identified by their accurate gender identity and lived names. The goal is to implement this policy by June 2024. Under the policy, UCSF will ensure that faculty, trainees, and staff:
  • Have at least three gender options to choose from in UC information systems – woman, man and nonbinary;
  • May request that their lived name be used in the UC system in all settings and situations that do not require their legal name;
  • Have an efficient process for all, including alumni and affiliates, to retroactively amend their gender designations and lived names on UC-issued documents and in information systems.

PIV Card Required for All Trainees at San Francisco VA

This is a reminder that all UCSF residents and fellows rotating at the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) must use their own Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card to log in to the computer network. The PIV card identifies the owner as the author in all medical record documentation. Sharing of PIV cards is never allowed.

We are reaching out to remind all UCSF residents and fellows to be sure to check that you have a working VA PIV Card prior to arriving at SFVAHCS for your rotation. This includes considering jeopardy coverage if you were to be called into VA.

UCSF Program Administrators should not schedule residents/fellows to work at VA if they have not completed the required onboarding to obtain a PIV card, including the UCMe VA onboarding packet, required annual VA training online module, fingerprinting, and the PIV appointment process.

Residents and fellows can call the VA Service Desk at 1-855-673-4357 to request a 14-day VA PIV card login exemption if there is a delay in receiving a VA PIV card prior to your VA rotation if you have forgotten it, or if it is not working.

Residents and fellows should contact their VA clinical service administrator and/or v21sfcGME@va.gov after requesting a PIV exemption so any issue can be remedied in a timely manner.
