NRCS - GMP Dairy Webinar

Georgia Milk Producers a nd Georgia NRCS are partnering to provide a free webinar for dairy producers. Join us Friday, June 13 at 10:00 AM to discuss how NRCS can provide engineering, technical, and financial assistance for your farm.

Are you considering making changes to your manure handling and storage system? Do you want to add cows but need more lagoon space? Do you want to learn about programs to assist dairy farmers in making these investments? Then make plans to attend this hour-long zoom on Friday.

Georgia Dept. of Agriculture Animal Health Alert: New World Screwworm

New World Screwworm (NWS) is a parasitic fly that causes serious disease in livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds, and rarely, people.  It is most often detected in livestock, horses, and dogs.  NWS was eradicated from the United States decades ago, but it has re-emerged in Central America and has been detected in Mexico.  There are no reported cases of NWS in the U.S. at this time.

NWS flies are attracted to wounds and mucous membranes, such as in animals that have given birth recently, have an injury, or had a surgical procedure, like dehorning, castration, or branding. 

Look Out For:

• Maggots in wounds or other body openings, such as ears, the nose, genitalia or the navel of newborn animals
• Wounds with a bloody discharge and foul odor
• Wounds that don’t heal and become larger as the maggots grow and feed on living tissue
• Signs of discomfort or unusual behavior in animals, such as not eating or drinking, or isolating themselves

Report Immediately

NWS is a reportable condition in Georgia. Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to the State Veterinarian at 404-656-3667.

Friday, June 13 - GMP & NRCS Dairy Webinar

The Georgia Milk Producers and Georgia NRCS are partnering together to provide a free webinar for dairy producers. Tuesday, June 24 - ACCM & GMP June Meetings

The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk and Georgia Milk Producers, Inc. will be holding their annual summer board of directors meetings on June 24 at the new Georgia Cattlemen's Association office (101 General Courtney Hodges Blvd., Perry, GA). ACCM will meet at 10:00 AM and GMP will meet at 1:00 PM. Lunch will be provided. All Georgia dairy farmers are invited to attend. RSVP to Bryce at bryce@gamilk.org.

July 31 - August 1 - Southeast Value-Added Dairy Conference

The Southeast Value-Added Dairy Conference will be held July 31 & August 1 at the University of Tennessee's Agricultural and Natural Resources Building in Knoxville, TN. Each year, the Southeast Value-Added Dairy Conference provides educational and networking opportunities for dairy business owners, researchers, Extension professionals, and industry partners.

Putnam County Dairy Festival Recognizes GMP

The Putnam County Dairy Festival took place Saturday, June 7 in Eatonton, GA. This annual celebration of the dairy industry's impact on Putnam County and the surrounding area takes place on the first Saturday of June every year. Traditionally, the Pilot Club of Eaton, the event organizers, honor a dairy farm family from Putnam County or organization that supports the dairy industry. This year, the Pilot Club of Eatonton chose to recognize the Georgia Milk Producers, Inc. In addition to being recognized in the festival's parade and official program outside the Putnam County courthouse, the Pilot Club of Eatonton and Farmer's and Merchant's Bank each made a $250 donation to the Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation in honor of June Dairy Month.

Also representing the Georgia dairy industry were the Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom and The Dairy Alliance. The Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom held a milking demonstration after the festival parade, and The Dairy Alliance passed out ice cream donated by Georgia Dairy Farmers and dairy promotional materials.
