H5N1 Update

Yesterday, USDA confirmed the first case of H5N1 in swine was detected in Oregon. This farm is a small-scale farm that had pigs and poultry mingled together with access to shared feed, water, and shelter. This is separate from the avian influenza cases that were identified in commercial poultry flocks in Washington and Oregon earlier this month (those cases are believed to be originating from wild bird introduction). 

More important for dairy operations, USDA also announced it will be expanding its H5N1 surveillance program for dairy operations. USDA has stated it will implement a multi-phased program in partnership with state veterinarians to collect bulk milk tank samples from farms on a regional and then state level to better assess the prevalence of H5N1 in dairy cattle. There are no additional details at this time, but Georgia Milk Producers staff is in communication with the State Veterinarian’s office. 

Finally, Utah’s Department of Agriculture and Food confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza in 8 commercial dairy facilities in Cache County. Utah becomes the 15th state to confirm H5N1 in dairy cattle.

Collegiate Beef and Dairy Clubs Support Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts with Southeast Strong T-Shirt Sale

Several collegiate dairy and beef clubs from across the Southeast have partnered together to raise funds for farms directly impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton by selling “Southeast Strong” t-shirts through Clemson Dairy Science Club and Tiger Town Graphics. All proceeds from the shirt sales will go towards the fundraising mission.

October Dairy Market Report

The following is an excerpt from the NMPF-DMI October Dairy Market Report. You can read the full report HERE.

“Highlights for the June-August period include continuing annual growth in total fluid milk consumption and the opposite for production of raw milk, both unusual when compared with decades-long trends. Yogurt, butter, other than American-type cheese, and even fluid milk and total cheese all effectively showed annual per capita consumption growth during the period. The U.S. dairy industry exported more than 17% of U.S. milk solids production during three consecutive months for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2022. The monthly National Dairy Product Sales Report prices of all four basic dairy products reached their highest levels for 2024 to date in September, while the August Dairy Margin Coverage margin was the highest since margin protection became the basic federal dairy safety-net program in 2015, with continued high prices and margins expected.”

The following is an excerpt from the Market Administrators Market Information Bulletin for October:

Southeast Market Summary

The minimum order uniform price for payment to producers supplying the Southeast Order marketing area during September 2024 is $25.01 per hundredweight for milk with a 3.5% butterfat test in Fulton County, Georgia. This is .965 times the uniform skim milk price of $12.85 per hundredweight plus 3.5 times the uniform butterfat price of $3.6019 per pound. Payment to producers may be adjusted by location differentials, if applicable, and by properly authorized deductions. Receipts of producer milk during September 2024 totaled 267.7 million pounds. There were 14 regulated pool distributing plants, 1 pool supply plant, and 9 cooperative associations submitting reports of receipts and utilization that were included in the computation of the uniform prices for September 2024. Total in-area Class I route disposition was 287.3 million pounds in September 2024, a decrease of 9.2 million pounds from September 2023.
