Today is the Last Day to Sign up for DMC

Today is the LAST DAY to sign up for Dairy Margin Coverage Program (DMC). The program allows producers to purchase coverage against USDA FSA’s calculated margin between all-milk price (calculated by FSA) and a representative feed costs including corn, soybean meal, and premium alfalfa hay.

Changes to the program will allow producers to establish updated production histories for the highest of years 2021, 2022, or 2023, purchase Tier 1 (reduced premiums) coverage for up to 6 million lbs., and allow producers to purchase catastrophic coverage for milk above the 6 million lbs. Tier 1 cap while selecting higher coverage for the first 6 million lbs. Under Tier 1. To sign up for DMC visit your local FSA Service Center.

USDA Offers Disaster Assistance to Agricultural Producers in Georgia Impacted by Winter Storms

(Athens, Ga., February 23, 2026) – Agricultural operations in Georgia have been significantly impacted by recent winter storms. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has technical and financial assistance available to help farmers and livestock producers recover from these adverse weather events.

USDA Disaster Assistance

Producers who experience livestock deaths in excess of normal mortality or sell injured livestock at a reduced price may be eligible for the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP). To participate in LIP, producers will have to provide acceptable documentation of death losses or evidence of reduced sales resulting from an eligible adverse weather event and must submit a notice of loss to the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) no later than March 1, 2027, for 2026 calendar year losses.

Meanwhile, the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP) provides eligible producers with compensation for feed and grazing losses. ELAP also includes costs associated with equipment rental fees for hay lifts and snow removal. For ELAP, producers are required to complete a notice of loss and application for payment to their local FSA office no later than March 1, 2027, for 2026 calendar year losses.

More Information

Additional USDA disaster assistance information can be found on farmers.gov, including USDA resources specifically for producers impacted by winter weather. Those resources include the Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool, Disaster-at-a-Glance fact sheet, Loan Assistance Tool, and Natural Disasters and Crop Insurance fact sheet. Additionally, FarmRaise offers an FSA educational hub with LIP and ELAP decision tools as well as farm loan resource videos. For FSA and NRCS programs, producers should contact their local USDA Service Center. For assistance with a crop insurance claim, producers and landowners should contact their crop insurance agent.

Hazard Mitigation Generator Grant Opportunity

Georgia dairy farmers may have the opportunity to receive cost-share funding for the purchase of emergency generators. In partnership with the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA), GMP has been working to find additional resources for dairy farms that are impacted by major weather events like Hurricane Helene in 2024. The Emergency Management division of GDA is seeking applications from Georgia dairy farmers to apply for assistance through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program through the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).

This grant will require a lot of paperwork and time to complete. GDA has worked with GEMA to extend the deadline for this funding opportunity to March 9, 2026. If you are are interested in learning more or applying, reach out to Bryce Trotter (bryce@gamilk.org, 229-221-3906) or Bethany Dyer (bethany@gamilk.org, 770-324-1260) as soon as possible to set up a Zoom call to discuss the components of the application.
