Message from GMR President

Alessandro Iuppa

The 2023 summer driving season has certainly presented its share of weather challenges. After some great weather for Nick Seldon’s May driving tour Mother Nature decided to take a turn at transforming Vermont into a jungle-like environment. The result: Ilan Weitzen’s North East Kingdom driving tour was a victim of severe, threatening weather. Ilan put in countless hours scoping out what would have been a wonderful tour route that we hope to use for a future event.

July 15th brought out the sun which contributed to a fine Porsche day at Vermont Cars & Coffee followed by the Rennline, Inc open house. Both events attracted a number of GMR members and their cars.(See below for photos!)

Despite the climatological challenges, we are looking forward to the annual GMR Potluck BBQ on Saturday, August 12 at Lee and Brenda’s lakeside home. That event will be followed by a South-Central Vermont driving tour on Saturday, August 26 led by Fred and Nancy Sperling of South Woodstock. See the below for more details and to register for these events

Other confirmed events are the 2023 GMR Annual Meeting in October and the Holiday Gathering in December. Additionally, we hope to add driving tours in September and October.

We hope you will be able to join us for one or more of the upcoming events.

2023 Green Mountain Region Potluck BBQ.

Saturday, August 12, 2023

Once again, GMR members Lee and Brenda Roy have generously offered to host the GMR BBQ at their lakeside home in Colchester. The BBQ is scheduled on Saturday, August 12 from noon to 4.00pm. The site, on Goodsell Point in, is conveniently located approximately 4 miles off from the I-89 Colchester exit. The aerial view will show it as a peninsula within Malletts Bay.

The club will provide the main course – hamburgers and hot dogs. However, as in prior years we are asking members to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share among the attendees as well as beverages for personal consumption. You might also consider bringing a portable chair for your added comfort.

This event is open to all GMR members, including PCA Juniors. There is no charge to attend but it is important that you pre-register at Motorsportreg.

The Roy’s location is ideal for the BBQ and for lawn games such as bocce and corn hole. There is also access to a cove for those who might want to take a dip. Should the weather threaten, they have a deck that can accommodate lots of people, with a terrific view west across Mallets Bay to the Adirondack Mountains.

If you have any questions, please drop an email to gmrpca@gmail.com.

South Central Vermont Driving Tour

Saturday, August 26, 2023

GMR members Fred and Nancy Sperling are planning a driving tour that will begin in Woodstock and culminate at their home in South Woodstock. In between, Fred plans to take us on some of the classic “Porsche” roads in the south-central Vermont area. From Woodstock we will travel through Brownsville, Downer's Corner, Tyson, Felchville and finally returning to South Woodstock. Given the recent flooding the exact route is still a work in progress as we assess drivability.

The tour will be approximately 60 miles in length and is expected to take about 1.5 - 2 hours of driving time. We will assemble in the rear parking lot at the Woodstock Ace Hardware at 452 Woodstock Road, Woodstock, VT 05091 with the pre-tour participant meeting at 10.30am with a prompt departure at 11.00am.

At the tour’s conclusion the Sperlings have invited all tour participants to join them for a “Sloppy Joe feast” at their South Woodstock home at 800 Noah Wood Road, South Woodstock, VT 05071. If you will be joining the after tour festivities we ask that you please bring a a side dish or dessert to share along with your favorite beverages. Please note that the final .8 miles to the Sperling residence is on a well maintained gravel road.

There is no fee to participate on the tour but we do need an accurate count so please click here to register and to complete the PCA Speedwaiver process at Motorsportreg For any questions, please send a note to gmrpca@gmail.com.

PCA Digital Membership Card is Coming

For the past year the PCA Digital Architecture team has been building the infrastructure to offer the option for members to have a digital membership card. If all goes according to plan, PCA will begin the rollout in the coming weeks. New members, using the updated application form, will have the option to request a digital card during the sign-up process. Existing members will have the option to obtain the digital card when renewing their membership.

You might ask - why a digital card? Besides moving PCA into the 21st century, the card is always with you, always up to date and is sustainable. The card front includes the member name and number as well as a QR code that indicates the valid-to date. The reverse side contains links to region and national websites, allows for push notifications and is geofence capable. If your membership is lapsed/non renewed, the QR code will be greyed out.

The digital membership cards will be available for Active, Family Active, Associate, Honorary, Life and Affiliate members. A couple of important notes - 1) the data flow is one way to the member, PCA does not track any information from your phone and 2) the card can only be obtained using your mobile phone. It is available for Apple, Google and Android phones and is intended to be stored in your respective digital wallet.

Membership Auto-Renew

PCA has added another valuable feature to each member’s profile page that provides the option to have your membership auto renew each cycle. Selecting this option alleviates any concern of forgetting to renew your membership when it becomes due.

This function will be available one month prior to your membership due date. At that time, you will receive a reminder from PCA of this important feature.

To complete the process, take the following steps:

-      Go to PCA.org.

-      Click on the members’ name at the top right of the page.

-      Member profile will be displayed on the left side of the page.

-      Just below “MY SETTINGS”, select Billing/Payment settings.

-      Enter payment information and select Auto-Renew.

While on your profile page it would be a good time to review the information in your profile and make any updates. Information such as address, phone number, Porsche vehicles, VIN, Co-member and PCA Jr. Having the correct information is helpful to both PCA and GMR in maintaining accurate records.

Calling All Kids to PCA Juniors

Did you know that PCA members can sign up their children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews for free provided they are under the age of 18? This is one of the many benefits of your PCA membership. New Juniors will receive an age appropriate welcome kit which includes a personalized name tag.

In just the past two years GMR has doubled our PCA Juniors membership, and we would like to add more. The more members, the more fun we will have when creating a junior’s event.

On the PCA.org website, hover over the Membership tab and scroll down to PCA JUNIORS to make your entry.

Former GMR Member and President David Smith Dies at 80

We are sad to announce the passing of former GMR member and president David Smith. He was president from 2011-2013. Prior to that Dave was vice president and served earlier as membership chair. Our condolences to his wife, Pauline, who attended every event with Dave. He was a tireless promoter of the club. Former president Carl Wulfestieg recalls"Dave had a reputation as a bull dog about membership. He would chase down other Porsche drivers he didn’t know and give them membership information. He would look for owners of parked cars at times going into restaurants or businesses to inquire about the P car owners!"

Click here for the obituary that appeared in the Valley News recently, which mentions his involvement in PCA and GMR. R.I.P.

A 997 Love Story from a New Green Mountain Member

(Editor's note: Charlie Delaney and his wife Kim just moved from Connecticut to Fayston, Vermont a couple of weeks ago.

Membership Chair Brad Kennison asked Charlie to tell the story of how he acquired his Porsche--just last month. Turned out to be the story of an all-time road trip with his 78-year-old dad!)

By Charlie Delaney

After finally realizing a long-time dream a year ago when I bought my first Porsche, a 996 C4S cabriolet, I really wanted a 997 coupe - so I made the tough decision to sell the 996 and go looking for the perfect car for me. I found it at a dealer in Indianapolis, and the car was exactly what I was looking for: an accident-free, base 6-speed 997.1 Carrera, adaptive sport seats and sport exhaust with relatively low miles and a good maintenance history. Oh, and I really wanted a color other than black or silver, so this one really stood out in Ruby Red Metallic… On its own - I knew this was the car for me - but the icing on the cake was the opportunity to turn the purchase into a great memory.

Instead of taking the dealer up on his offer to assist with transport to my house, I called my 78-year-old father, Paul, who lives in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, and convinced him to fly to Indy, meet me there and then road trip home in the 997. My dad is not a big car guy, but has always been supportive of the various passions I’ve gone off the deep end for over the years, including driving and Porsches in general…

We met the dealer at the airport, signed some paperwork and we were in the car 45 minutes after landing! First stop - Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We pulled up outside the track, took a couple of selfies, and hit the road for a few hundred miles to Cleveland. The next morning we were at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a selfie in front of Johnny Cash’s tour bus, and then we were off to Niagara Falls. Wow - amazing experience.

From there we were off to Dad's place on Seneca Lake where you drive half a mile down a dirt road right in the middle of a vineyard down to his cottage. I left him there the next morning and finished up the 1,000-mile trip solo. The car performed flawlessly. The conversation and reminiscing with my dad throughout the trip was unbeatable. It had been years since we had that much time together--with nothing to do than talk and catch up. And the stories he told were amazing!

For my wife Kim and me, the opportunity to make memories either with drives to out-of-the-way places we probably wouldn’t otherwise venture to, or the fun of meeting other PCA members and sharing stories, is what makes the Porsche experience about so much more than just the cars. (But, yeah - the cars are pretty great too!).

Thanks again to Brad for the very warm welcome to the club, and I look forward to meeting you all soon! We have the BBQ on our calendar for 8/12 and are planning to be there!

Want your spouse or partner to also get these

Green Mountain PCA Newsletters?

When you joined PCA (recently or forever ago) you no doubt listed your partner or spouse as a co-member. Many co-members however have not provided their email addresses. If your spouse/partner would like to receive the Mountaineer as well as yourself, have them call PCA HQ at (410) 381-0911‬ and give PCA the information. It only takes a few minutes as PCA is very efficient. That way you both will receive The Mountaineer and other pertinent club emails.

If your co-member remembers his or her co-member login (it is separate from the main member) you can do it that way too-- but calling is probably the quickest.

Member Feature:
Send us your photos!

We have started a feature highlighting a different member in the GMR Mountaineer with his or her Porsche. If you would like to be featured in future newsletter please submit some photos of you and your car along with a paragraph or two explaining why you joined the GMR, your favorite drives or whatever!

Please reply to this email with your photo and information.
