GPD K-9 unit set to return despite calls to disband - WCJB

The unit had been operating in limited capacity since March 2023. Despite significant public support to completely disband GPD’s K-9 unit, city leaders announced it will soon be returning to full deployment.

With revised training protocols, improved supervision and enhanced focus on safety measures, the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) will put its K-9 unit back on regular duty status starting Monday. The return to regular duty follows a 10-month stint of limited deployment protocol as the units worked to increase staffing.
