Beginning this week, work will begin on High Banks Road, a portion of 58th Street, and Thurston Road. These are more of the projects being done through the 2018 voter-approved GO Bond Measure 20-296 to fix a list of priority streets in Springfield. We mailed a postcard notification to businesses and residents in the area late last week.

Work will begin on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk crossing ramp improvements. Once complete, work will shift to the paving portion of the project. Paving is estimated to begin later this summer and will continue through the fall of this year.

Paving work continues on Mohawk Boulevard and Olympic Street. Paving is occurring at night to lessen traffic impacts: Sunday through Thursday nights, from 7 pm to 7 am the next day. Once paving is complete, traffic striping and markings will be applied to the pavement including crosswalk markings. Work on the two projects began in early February 2021 and will continue through the fall of this year.

Work on ADA sidewalk ramp improvements continues on 42nd Street between Main Street and the entrance to International Paper. Once the ADA improvements are complete, work will shift to the paving portion of the project. Traffic striping and markings will then be applied to the pavement including crosswalk markings. Paving is estimated to begin later this summer with the project slated to be completed by September 30, 2021.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather and other factors.

Where is the work taking place for projects underway?

What are the construction work hours?
For crossing ramps and intersection work: 7 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. The paving on Mohawk Boulevard and Olympic Street is occurring at night: Sunday through Thursday nights, from 7 pm to 7 am the next day.

What is happening with the crosswalks?
The construction activities include removing the old concrete crossing ramps, grading the ramp areas, and pouring the new ramps. The ramps take several days to cure before they can open to the public.
 
Why do the current ramps need replacement?
We are upgrading existing ramps to be compliant with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
 
How are vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles impacted during construction?
The existing sidewalk ramps are closed and there is a posted detour route for pedestrians and cyclists. Businesses and residences will remain accessible to vehicles.
 
The streets look in pretty good shape, why is construction happening now?
It is much less expensive to re-pave streets before damage happens to the sub-surface layers. Repairing the streets now will save significant funds in the long term.
