DO YOU KNOW A TEACHER WHO WOULD BE A GREAT MISSIONARY?
|
|
Hillcrest School in Jos, Nigeria is a Christian K-12 school with a long history of serving missionary kids and local Nigerians. The LCMS sent teachers and administrators to serve at Hillcrest from 1963 - 2010. GLO began sending missionary teachers in 2016, continuing the tradition of having Lutherans serving at Hillcrest. The campus provides a beautiful and enriching atmosphere to serve as a Christian teacher. Currently GLO missionary, Cheryl Talsma, is teaching there and will be serving as elementary school principal! This is a unique opportunity to see life through a different cultural lens; to use your gifts in a new environment and grow spiritually. If you, or someone you know, has a heart for missions and are interested in dedicating 2 years or more to teaching overseas, check out: Welcome - Hillcrest School and contact Jim directly at: director@globallutheranoutreach.com.

In our last newsletter (Feb 2023) we mentioned that we would be travelling back to Chile for a mission forum. That took place in March and included the dedication of a new outreach/medical center in Valparaiso and the ordination of Marcelo Rivas! We praise God for calling Pastor Marcelo (with his wife and 3 children) to serve at one of the three Lutheran churches in the 5th region of Chile - each of those churches now has their own pastor! Pastor Rivas also serves as chaplain at one of the Lutheran schools.

Also while in Chile, our hearts were filled with pride and joy to see the members of “Divine Providence” Lutheran church welcoming their new pastor, GLO missionary (from Venezuela) Adrian Ventura and his wife, Cruz Maria. Together, the ministry of evangelism, Word & Sacrament and worship continues in the city of Santiago. Please pray for Josue Ventura, the pastor’s son, as he graduates from the seminary in the Dominican Republic and is waiting for his Venezuelan passport to be renewed so he can serve a vicarage in Chile. We thank God for the blessing of maintaining our relationships with many brothers and sisters in Christ in Chile.

The "blessing" of travel!

Victor, Belén and Sofia Rivas, Guyana
In the last few months, Jim's responsibilities as GLO director have taken him around the world! After Chile, Jim travelled to British Guyana where he did orientation for the new GLO missionaries, Victor and Belen Rivas (from Guatemala). At the end of April, Jim and GLO partner missionary Dale Talsma (Nigeria) led a mission conference in Kenya, at the invitation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya. The purpose of the conference was to encourage the Kenyan Lutherans to follow up on their intention to send their Kenyan missionary, Rev. Amos Otula, as a GLO missionary to Uganda. Pray for the Lutheran Church of Kenya as they strive to send the Otula family.

Kenya mission conference
Rev. Dale Talsma (GLO, Nigeria) is shown presenting to about 100 participants, most of them lay men and women.
Mission Conference #2 for 2023 is scheduled for the beginning of June. Jim, Liisa and GLO board member Wondimu Game (Ethiopia) will seek to inspire the Lutheran church of Argentina and guests from other Latin American countries to become missionary-sending churches! Plans are being finalized for a dynamic 3-day convocation which will show the blessings and the techniques to being a mission-sending church. Following that, the GLO board will have their annual meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We covet your prayers for travels and the multiple events.

Jim and Liisa with GLO board member Wondimu Game (R.), former GLO missionary at Hillcrest Joshua Wareham, and 2 leaders from the Lutheran Church in South Sudan. At the St. Louis seminary.
In between international travels, we squeezed in a trip to St. Louis to visit GLO personnel who are currently living there: board member Wondimu Game (Ethiopia), in the PhD program; GLO missionary Dixon and Christiana Gbeanquoi (Liberia/Nigeria), also in the PhD program; former GLO missionary Josh Wareham (Hillcrest School, Nigeria), now studying to be a pastor; and board member Peter Kirby (St. Louis). While there, Jim also met with some Sudanese church leaders and received a request for GLO to send theological educators to South Sudan. May the strong GLO presence in St. Louis plant "mission seeds"!

Since returning from Chile in March, Liisa has had the children (AND grandchildren) as a priority! After seeing our daughter, Nika, on the trip to St. Louis, she headed out to Arizona in time for our youngest granddaughter’s first birthday. Because Gabi and Daniel will be relocating their family from Arizona to Georgia in July, she did some babysitting as Gabi flew out to house hunt and to visit schools in the Atlanta area.
Next was a visit to the Howey family in Marietta, GA. Liisa was able to participate in more grandchildren activity as well as give Soni some help as she is expecting their third child in July! Everyone is happily anticipating having the families of 2 Tino girls living closer and all the cousins together.
Lord willing, there will be a visit to Ben and Scarlett in Guatemala in the next few months. They are happily serving as a team at Divine Shepherd Lutheran church (and several small rural congregations) in Zacapa, Guatemala.

Can we stop by for a visit?
|
|
Our “new” Ford Escape is racking up miles as we drive back and forth from Detroit to Miami quite frequently! If you live along that route – more or less – let us know. Actually, we can go veer off that path as well. We’d love to visit with some of our GLO mission partners – both individuals and congregations. Just drop us an email at tinoteam@hotmail.com.

*We ask the Lord’s blessings on the upcoming Mission Conference in Argentina (June 2 - 4). Pray for the Holy Spirit to move hearts to respond to God’s call for His church to be actively involved in sending missionaries. Ask the Lord to shield all conference participants from the attacks of devil - he is the greatest enemy of missions!
*Join us in praising God for the birth of four new babies! Pray for new mothers Oriana, Raquel and Ori (Chile) and for GLO missionaries and new parents Heather & Nathan Pittman! Continue to pray for healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries for Genesis and Glorise (Chile) and our daughter Sonrisa (Georgia).
*Lift up in prayer, Jose Vilches, president of Divine Providence Lutheran church as he continues to deal with health problems; specifically, that the doctors will be able to do a 2nd surgery to correct the replacement of his hip.
*Pray for the move and transition of daughter Gabi and Daniel Sipp and family to Georgia. Pray for guidance as they and daughter Sonrisa and Tyler Howey search for the correct school for their children.
*Pray to the Lord of the Harvest to raise up teachers, DCEs, intern students to answer the call to be a missionary teacher in other parts of the world. Specifically, pray for Hillcrest School in Jos, Nigeria.

|
*We remember the Rivas family – new missionaries in Guyana – as they deal with health issues as well as adaptation and language learning. May God put a shield around them to protect them from the attacks of Satan.
*Praise God for the fellowship of GLO personnel in St. Louis! It was an encourgement to us to see them. May our people there be an encouragement to one another and also be planters of "mission seeds" in the seminary community.

What happened to the support gauge?
"That was the first thing I looked at," commented one of our long-time mission partners.
Part of transitioning to full-time director of Global Lutheran Outreach is to transition our means of support. Looking toward the future, it is unlikely that any successor to the leadership of GLO will be willing to raise their own support. GLO needs to be able to pay a salary.
At this time, however, GLO as an organization is not large or mature enough to pay a full salary. GLO can pay a partial salary, and our plan is to supplement that through the offerings of our faithful mission partners. We want to avoid shifting the burden of our support to our other missionaries.
