GOLF NOW! CHICAGO July News - Holiday Golf Specials, Tournament Updates, Dealing With Poor Shots by PGA Professional Bill Abrams & More!
Summer golf is in full swing and golf courses are busy! Celebrate this Independence Day with a day on the links with family and friends. It’s a time to give thanks for all that we have and enjoy in our lives!

Many of the upcoming professional golf tournaments have been cancelled, rescheduled for later in the year, or postponed until 2021. The current professional golf events are taking place, but without fans!  Some are also recreating events and showcasing highlights on television from past events.

If you haven’t been able to get out to golf much, now is the time to hone your skills and take a few lessons.  Bill Abrams, PGA Professional and the 2019 Illinois PGA Golf “Teacher of The Year” gives us some great tips in our July newsletter about dealing with poor golf shots.
How To Deal With Poor Shots
By PGA Professional, Bill Abrams

As you all realize, golf is a very fickle and humbling game. Even the greatest players hit poor shots – it’s a fact of the game and life. How you react is a totally different subject.

First things first, a person basically cannot control their thoughts, only control how you react to them. Overreacting to a poor shot can and does cause more poor results. For instance, if you hit a shot too far, often times a player will hit the next one too short. This is overreacting to what just happened. We have all done this more than we care to admit. I often hear players say “I’m not going to do that” as opposed to “I plan to do that”. The difference here is huge, framing your intent positively, opposed to avoiding a certain malady.

By adding an effective pre and post shot routine to our game, we can become much better...

Golf’s Future Stars To Return To Blackthorn Golf Club For 9th Season!
Catch the future stars of the game on the Road to the LPGA as they compete for the 9th season in the Four Winds Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, IN on August 31 through September 6. The 2020 tournament will include 144 golfers who will play for a $150,000 purse. With so many professional golf tournaments being cancelled or pushed back until 2021, this is great news that this event has been rescheduled for the end of August/first week of September.

“The Four Winds Invitational has become the premiere summer sporting event in South Bend,” said Matthew Wesaw, Tribal Chairman of the Pokagon Band. “Not only do thousands of people come out each year to watch these talented players compete and earn their way on to the LPGA Tour, but we have generated over $1 million in prize money and raised close to $700,000 for Beacon Children’s Hospital over the past eight years. We look forward to having another successful tournament again this year.”

The Four Winds Invitational has proven to be a great place to see some of the future stars of the LPGA Tour. Brooke Henderson, who won the 2015 Four Winds Invitational, went on to become a seven-time LPGA Tour champion. Countless other Four Winds Invitational players have also gone on to successful careers on the LPGA Tour, including 2016 champion Jackie Stoelting.

“The Pokagon Band and its Four Winds Casinos have transformed the start of the summer for so many people in South Bend,” said Tim Firestone, Owner and General Manager of Blackthorn Golf Club. “It has turned out to be such a thrill to see these young golfers succeed here in South Bend, and then move on to greater success on the LPGA Tour.”

The Four Winds Invitational is one of four Symetra Tour events that are part of the Potawatomi Cup, which highlights the contributions of four member Tribes from the Potawatomi Nation who host tournaments throughout the Midwest. A total of $40,000 in bonus money is available to players based on performance, including $6,000 to the winner of the Potawatomi Cup. This is in addition to the normal purse payout for each event.

Mark your calendar to join us for this exciting event as it grows to involve community and area businesses in this great fundraising effort!
