World Tennis Day NYC World Tennis Event
was a great success according to the ITF's March 11th newsletter.  The event garnered support from around the globe and was such a success that thoughts are already turning to March 3 of next year.  The focus of the first World Tennis Day was to encourage children to take up the game of tennis and more that 50 National Associations rose to the challenge and put on a variety of events aimed at increasing participation among the Under 10's.
Professional players also took to the courts in Hong Kong and New York City as part of the BNP Paribas Showdown events.

2ND ANNUAL RACKET GIVEAWAY/PLAYDAY AT CITY PARK/PEPSI TENNIS CENTER

Dr. Karen  DeSalvo, City Health Commissioner, and physical therapist/tennis pro Kevin Dessauer will address the importance of youth fitness activities like tennis to the kids and parents at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center, 5900 Marconi Drive on Saturday, March 16, 2013.  The Racquet Giveaway/Playday is for youth ages 8-12 and will be from 10am to 12 Noon.
There are about 30 kids who have pre-registered and who will receive a free, age appropriate racket and ball.  Some of the rackets and most of the balls are being donated by SECOND SERVE TENNIS CENTER.  MARTIN WINE CELLAR has agreed to donate, as they have to most of our events over the past five years.
This festive day of tennis fun is designed to introduce more metro kids to the game of tennis.  The Health Commissioner and Kevin Dessauer join NOYT in its springtime push to get more kids playing tennis, at the ongoing free Saturday sessions, and over the summer at the two weeks of tennis clinics New Orleans Youth Tennis offers every year.
As with every other Saturday morning session that NOYT has presented over the last 5 years, the event is open to the public, and free to all who show up.

College Tennis Results

The Tulane men's team defeated Youngstown State 6-1 at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center on Saturday.  The win for the Greenies (7-4, 2-1 CUSA) was the third straight and the sixth in seven matches at their home courts this spring.
"It was a really tough day out there with the weather issues," said coach Mark Booras.  We had 35 mph winds and three rain delays, but our guys were able to stay focused and pick up another win."

Xavier University sophomore Nikita Soifer rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Cumberland's Pablo Borrero that clenched XU's dual-match victory in Montgomery, AL on Saturday.
"This was one of the most gut-wrenching, drama-filled matches I've been involved in," said coach Alan Green.  I still don't know how we won.  I do know that I have a group of guys whoo never quit, even when it seems they have no chance to win."

The XU women's team defeated Campbellsville 6-3 on Sunday to finish 3-0 in the AUM Invitational.
Kourtney Howell and Amanda Materre won in doubles and singles for the women.
"I'm so proud of how both our teams represented the university in this event, XU coach Alan Green said.

Last week the Loyola teams defeated Louisiana College, men with a 7-2 victory and the women swept the Lady Wildcats 9-0.
This weekend in Hattiesburg, the Wolf Pack fell to William Carey, the men by a score of 8-1 and the ladies by 9-0.
Then, both teams came back and defeated the Tougaloo Bulldogs 9-0 and 5-0.
" I am proud of how well we fought the entire weekend.  Both teams played tough against William Carey who is a very tough opponent, and then we were able to earn some wins over Tougaloo and Louisiana college.  This was a very good team effort," said head coach Zubbin Engineer.

The UNO tennis teams were defeated by South Alabama on Wednesday in Mobile, Al.  The men's match was 7-0 and the women's match by a 5-2 score.
This weekend in Montgomery, the UNO men and women teams rolled to a 7-0 victories over Alabama State. Then, the UNO teams fell to Troy State; the women by 6-1 and men by 5-2.

The 48th ranked Tulane women's team defeated C-USA  rival University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) this weekend  7-0.  Tulane improved to 7-5 overall, including 5-1 at home on the courts of City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.  "I am very proud of the girls today for a solid conference win and having to battle the windy conditions," head coach Terri Sisk said.

Williams College began their spring tennis season this past weekend.  On Saturday the Elps defeated Skidmore 9-0; followed by a 7-2 victory Sunday over Wesleyan.  Nancy Worley of New Orleans won both of her matches, singles and doubles each day.  The teams will be playing in California next week during spring break.

The following is an announcement from Leif Olsson
BMDCC Head Tennis Pro/Camp Director
Cell:  504-401-3861

Hi Everyone,

Summer is quickly approaching, and it's time to start thinking about signing your kids up for camp.  Camp BISSONET is a great camp choice for your children.  We'll have exciting outdoor and indoor activities every day.  The AUDUBON ZOO MOBILE, and the AUDUBON BUG MOBILE will visit our camp. I and my counselors make sure we give plenty of personal attention to each camper making them feel very comfortable and safe here at Camp Bissonet.

This year I am offering day, weekly, 4, 6, 8 week packages with great discounts.  One example is if you have two children attending camp you get 10% off for your second child.  If you have a third child you get 15% off that child.

For campers interested in tennis, I am doing the QuickStart format for children 10 & Under.  This means using smaller courts, a smaller recquet, and low compression balls.

You can get the Registration form on the NOMATA website:
