Fox News covers Sen. Ted Cruz’s formal objection to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s superintendent Vice Admiral Joanna Nunan’s decision to move the massive painting of Jesus from the Academy’s administrative building to the Academy’s chapel, as was demanded by MRFF back in January.
Cruz has written a letter to Vice Admiral Nunan accusing her of having a "flawed understanding" of the First Amendment, Cruz’s letter ends with seven questions to Vice Admiral Nunan, four of which are regarding her communications with MRFF founder and president Mikey Weinstein.
In his letter, Cruz addresses Mikey Weinstein by name in 4 of his 7 closing questions to Vice Admiral Nunan:
- You told Mr. Weinstein that the painting will “eventually” be moved. When will that take place?
- In your email to Mr. Weinstein, you reference having “already identified similar concerns with this painting.” Prior to receiving Mr. Weinstein’s complaint, in the past ten years how many complaints did the Academy receive regarding the “Christ on the Water” painting from persons other than Mr. Weinstein or his organization?
a. How many of these complaints, if any, were from cadets?
b. How were these complaints, if any, resolved?
- Had you or your staff had any contact with Mr. Weinstein or members of his organization prior to his email? If so, please provide a copy of all correspondence.
- With whom did you consult upon receiving Mr. Weinstein’s demands, and what advice did they provide?
