Welcome from the Mothers' Club
Welcome Back, South Families!

On behalf of the Mothers' Club I would like to welcome all of our new and returning to South families, especially to the freshmen class of 2026! We are looking forward to a fantastic school year!

The Mothers' Club is South's Parent Organization. We are a family organization comprised of dads, grandparents, guardians, alumni, staff, and moms as active members.
For more than 90 years our nonprofit organization has supported Grosse Pointe South and its student body by contributing time, resources and financial assistance to Scholarship, Enrichment, and Preservation programs, as well many school year activities and projects.

We are grateful for all the families and donors who were involved in last year’s success and encourage YOU to join the Mothers’ Club. By joining, not only will you be helping to support many projects throughout the year, but also you will receive a student directory.

If you would like to find out more about what is going on at South, meet some great people and maybe get involved, please join us at our monthly General Membership Meetings which are held the second Wednesday of each month, at 7:00 pm, in Cleminson Hall. Our first meeting will Wednesday, September 21th at 7:00 pm. Since our organization is run entirely by volunteers your participation is essential to our success.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Beverly Bennert
Mothers’ Club President
Mothers' Club 2022-2023 Executive Board
About the Mothers' Club
The Mothers' Club uses all funds raised to invest in the past, present, and future of South.

  • Past: Preserving our historic building and grounds.
  • Present: Enriching the classroom experience.
  • Future: Awarding scholarships to graduating seniors.

In addition to our three funding areas, the Mothers' Club also:
  • Produces High Pointes, a monthly emailed newsletter keeping families informed on Mothers’ Club activities.
  • Produces the South Student-Parent Directory.
  • Manages and staffs the School Store.
  •  Maintains the Mothers' Club website, Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter accounts to keep families informed about what's happening at South.
  • Supports and chaperones various dances, events, and the All Night Party for graduating seniors.

Annual membership is $30 and includes one directory. Additional directories may be purchased for $20.

Have questions or need more information? Please contact our very helpful membership committee chair Steve Justin at [email protected].
Student Directory Info: Fall Registration Heads-Up!

Remember to provide the information that you wish to share in the printed South High School 2022-2023 Student Directory by completing the GPPSS Family Directory pages during K12 Online Registration.

It's the only way to get your student's information included
in the 2022-2023 Student Directory.
Community Partnership & Advertising

The mission of the Mothers’ Club is to support student scholarships, classroom enrichments and building preservation projects. This is accomplished through fundraising, endowments, and in-kind donations. We need your help!

There are various ways your business or organization can participate in the Mothers' Club Community Partnership Program:

  • Premier advertising placements in the School Student-Parent Directory, monthly parent newsletter (High Pointes), and on the Mothers' Club social media platforms and website [with URL clickthroughs]
  • Sponsor a college scholarship in your business name for a graduating senior at the Mothers' Club Scholarship Ceremony in May 2023.
  • Direct contributions to the Mothers’ Club.

For more information and to secure your placement as one of our advertisers, please contact Lori Nixon at: [email protected].

September 2022 Counselors Corner

Welcome back! We look forward to working with returning families and our new families from the class of 2026.

We are happy to welcome Mrs. Jennifer Vick to the Counseling Center.  Mrs. Vick will take the place of the recently retired Mr. Burson, who worked with students and families at the beginning of the alphabet. You may already know Mrs. Vick as a member of the Grosse Pointe community. She comes to us with many years of teaching and counseling experience from Royal Oak High School. Please join me in welcoming her home to South!

Who is my student’s Counselor?
How do I get in touch with my student’s counselor?
Click here for Counselors' emails and phone numbers.

How do I request a schedule change?
The following are eligible reasons for a schedule change:

  • Scheduling error
  •  Lack of prerequisite class/grade requirements
  •  Moving to a more challenging course level
  •  Failure to complete a course in the spring semester or in summer school which would make the student ineligible for a chosen course
  •  A transcript for a new student indicates a schedule change is necessary.

Requests for any other reason, including those based on extenuating circumstances, will be reviewed and must be approved by the administration. You may complete this form to request a change. Generally speaking, level change requests (like Honors Freshman English to traditional Freshman English or AP US history to traditional US History) require a month or so of honest effort before those requests will be reviewed.

SENIOR PARENTS:
Counselors will meet with all Seniors on Friday to review the college application process and ensure that all seniors who still need to make testing arrangements for the ACT or SAT have the information they need.  During this important information session, we will cover the following topics:

  • Using Naviance for the College Application Process
  • Timetable for college preparation
  • The College Application Process
  • Important info on college visits and Financial Aid Night
  • The letter of recommendation process
  • Important testing dates for Senior year
  • How to request an official high school transcript
  • Early Decision and Early Action possibilities
  • How to share important information with your counselor for letters of recommendation

Everything we share with your student in this meeting is also easily referenced online at the counseling center website.

We will follow up with a Senior Parent Evening on the following Monday in the auditorium.  We will cover the same items stated above in our student meeting. Date/Time/Location will be shared via weekly eblast closer to the date.

An important message on college application timing.
When college advisors suggest that you “apply early” to a school for your best admissions opportunity, I’d like you to think of that date as by October 15. We strongly encourage applications for seniors who intend to apply to the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) or Michigan State University by October 15 to meet the Early Action deadline of November 1. Students with complete applications at these schools by this date will receive a decision from the school by the end of January 2023

JUNIOR PARENTS: The following Friday, after meeting with seniors, counselors will meet with all juniors in small groups.  At the meetings, we will provide the juniors with information about making the most of this important high school year.  This will include understanding the impact of grades and test scores, standardized testing in the junior year, college night, post-high school planning, and more.   We will follow up with a Junior Parent Evening the next Monday in the auditorium. We will cover the same items stated above in our student meeting. Date/Time/Location will be shared via weekly eblast closer to the date.

Wednesday, October 12th, the PSAT/NMSQT will be given at South.  All juniors will take this test in preparation for the Spring state-required SAT.  While this is the practice test for the SAT, it is also the test that juniors take to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Freshmen and sophomores will also take this test for practice. Registration for the test will be done in school.  If students are interested in preparing for the PSAT or SAT, a fantastic and FREE resource is on Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). They are the only test prep partner of the College Board, so they will have the latest SAT preparation.  The best part is that it is all free.

FRESHMAN PARENTS Welcome to Grosse Pointe South!  Counselors are happy to meet with you and your student.  Parents and students can make appointments by calling 432-3519.  Please check here regularly to see important information from the counseling team.
