Message from the Mothers' Club President

Happy New Year to all of our Grosse Pointe South families! May this year bring you happiness, health and prosperity.

Thank you, Jennifer Steinhebel, and all of our amazing volunteers for hosting such an excellent teacher appreciation luncheon. Our teachers work tirelessly to educate and inspire our students, and it's wonderful to see them recognized and celebrated.

Our next Mothers Club general meeting is scheduled for January 17th in Cleminson Hall. During this meeting, we will be voting to grant our second and final round of teacher grants. We encourage all members to attend and participate in this decision-making process.

Mark your calendars and save the date for our annual fundraiser on March 1st! This is an exciting event that brings our community together to support our school and raise funds for important initiatives. Keep reading for more details and get ready for a fun-filled evening of entertainment, auctions and more.

Warm regards,

Michelle Parikh

A special thanks to the following donors for supplying us with food and drinks for our Powderbuff concession stand:

  • The Babcock Family
  • The Fett Family
  • The Gates Family
  • The Haindl Family
  • The Kendall Family
  • The Melhem Family
  • The Rizer Family

In addition, we want to extend another special thanks to Janeil DiVita, Jim Rizer, and the South volleyball program for volunteering their time to ensure our Powderbuff event went smoothly. We would not have been able to host the event without your help! And of course, congrats to team Wisconsin for winning the tournament!

The class of 2027 will continue to have breadstick sales and snack cart deliveries every other week. Breadstick sales take place on Thursdays in the main hallway during both lunches. Snack cart days change based on events and other things happening that week, but it is always on weeks that do not have breadstick sales.

Save the date! The freshmen class will be hosting a carnival night fundraiser in South’s main gym on Friday, March 15, 2024. There will be games with prizes and possibly a movie showing. Food will also be provided including pizza, popcorn, candy, etc. There will be a $10 entry fee. Stay tuned for more information about this event.

January 2024 Counselors' Corner

Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family are healthy and feeling a measure of refresh following the winter break. Good health is a valuable commodity always, but especially as we experience this “tridemic.” Thank you for all you do to support good health in your homes.

Midterms Week Jan 16-19

As a reminder, each quarter is worth 40%, and the midterm/final is worth 20% of the semester grade. While preparing for mid-terms, it might be a good idea to talk to your students about test anxiety and study strategies. The best way to combat test anxiety is to be well-prepared for the exam; however, sometimes, students need additional tools. Below are some ideas and resources that might help your students.

●     For test anxiety tips from Brown University, the Princeton Review, and

another one from Very Well Mind.

●     This link takes you to study strategy tips for students and parents

●     This link is to the South Counseling Webpage with many study resources

and tools.

On the topic of anxiety…

Counselors presented in Freshman English classes to discuss leading issues in mental health, Anxiety and Depression. Feedback from students has been positive as we work to break the stigma of mental health. I have been so impressed by a recent television campaign Mental Health IS Health. it is an “initiative rooted in the reality that we all have mental health and need to take care of it like we do our physical health. The initiative aims to normalize the conversation, create a connection to resources and inspire action on mental health.” Take a look at the website for some great resources and additional information on health and wellness. Also, be sure to check out the Wellness Wednesday posts each week on Schoology.

Course Selection

Choosing classes for the 2024-25 school year is right around the corner. We will again complete this process electronically via Schoology so look for your student to share their course selection sheet with you via email. On February 1, teachers will meet with students individually in each of their classes to make a recommendation of the proper course to take in each subject. Remember to consider school/life balance in making these decisions. More information on the full process to come in February.
