The Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce Newsletter
Spring 2021 Newsletter
Hello Chamber Partners!
WE ARE BACK!  Our community has re-opened almost to 100% and is ready for the summer season!  Some minor restrictions are still in place, but are at the discretion of the business owner.  Silver lining from the pandemic, outdoor dining has strongly resumed and has been expanded.  Our retailers just finished a sidewalk sale and a sense of optimism abounds.

The Chamber is busier than ever.  Planning our events and having our office/visitors center open for the influx of visitors.  Two new initiatives through PSEG allowed the Chamber to receive grant money to support incentives to support the enhancement of outdoor spaces where our local businesses provided outdoor dining and commerce. The program provided funding of up to $10,000 for our Chamber. We had 18 Chamber members benefit from this program through the Chamber purchasing tables, chairs, planters, umbrellas, lights and even outdoor clothing racks.

This Spring the Chamber sponsored yet another artwalk in collaboration with the Night Herons.  The self-guided outdoor artwalk had art in 33 business locations throughout the Village.  With over 75 pieces of art representing 30 artists.  We also included our 5 downtown murals.

Your Chamber remains active in community involvement.  Invited to Discover LI press conference in Long Beach to celebrate the unveiling of their ‘Angel Mural’.  We have our own one here painted on the   outside wall of Salsa Salas in the Regency alleyway as well.   Discovery LI had chosen Port Jefferson for this tourist interactive mural project and the Chamber was the lead administrator for this to happen.  In addition, we have once again been chosen for a new marketing incentive with Discover Long Island for the production of a live stream video with an ‘Influencer’ to help bring consumers to our Village.  With the PJ BID we partnered up for the community clean-up May15th and we sponsored 3 ribbon cuttings for new businesses!  Supported TAAG with their fundraiser efforts  for ‘Tunnels to Tower Foundation’ which raised $1,500, attended the opening commissioning of our PJ Yacht Club, and witnessed the demolition of the old SC Water Authority building being razed for the NEW Port Jefferson Ferry Company offices!
It is an exciting time for the chamber and the BOD wishes you all a very successful and PROFITABLE upcoming season!

Thank you,

Mary Joy Pipe

THE Long Island Explorium was pleased to announce that they had been selected by the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) along with 27 museums from across the country to participate in  IF/THEN® Gender Equity Grants. Through the support of the IF/THEN®, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies®, more than $300,000 is being awarded to ASTC-member science and technology centers and museums in the United States seeking to address equity in gender representation across museum content.

The IF/THEN® grant will support the Long Island Explorium’s efforts to amplify gender representation in both museum content and programming through the creation of new museum signage, the production of media content, and the development of new content highlighting women in STEM to augment our existing STEM workshops. “We are very excited to be part of this IF/THEN® project and to show all who visit and learn with us that #shecanstem! All young girls deserve a future in STEM, and ‘IF she can see it, THEN she can be it.’ We look forward to inspiring girls to pursue careers in STEM”, said Angeline Judex, Executive Director.

Congratulations to Peconic based Pindar Vineyards who took top honors, receiving the ‘Governor’s Cup for their 2019 ‘Dr. Dan’s Signature Collection, Gewirztraminer.’  This esteemed award showcases that NYS is a premier wine destination and Pindar is in our own backyard and a Chamber Partners!  Pindar Damianos, owner and general manager, said “This has been a true testament to our dedication to wine making on Long Island.”

Our Chamber Partner Island Federal’s is offering  their new MasterCard Promo!  1% on Balance Transfers and Purchases for ONE year. Promo ends on June 30th, 2021. Redeem for: Cash Back, Gift Cards, and Travel! Apply Online at islandfcu.com or speak to an Island Representative.

Stony Brook University was proud to host its 61st Commencement in May. Celebrated the academic achievements of the Class of 2021 with 10 ceremonies, all held outdoors at LaValle Stadium rain or shine. Degrees To Be Bestowed were: 4,645 Bachelor’s Degrees, the largest number of degrees awarded in a year; 2,260 Master’s Degrees; 600 Doctoral and Professional Degrees and 275 Certificates!

Don’t Forget to VOTE June 15th in the Port Jefferson Elections. Mayoral and trustee race. Voting place Port Jefferson Village Center, hours 6-9pm.
‘Covid’ is leaving the building! Shops and restaurants are open with full capacity and our business community is moving ahead! Flowers are blooming and our Village is welcoming residents and visitors again.

The Chamber sponsored spring artwalk went well this May and plans are in the works for the fall with added features!

Our first MAJOR fundraiser for the Chamber is this coming August, with an outdoor Smooth, Cold, & Fun Food Crawl scheduled for the 19th and the rain date is the 26th.  An Eventbrite ticketed event for the cost of $25 with 13 participating venues!

Summer season will bring back the Villages music, movie and children’s programs! The 4th of July parade sponsored by the PJ Fire Department will be on.  But to make NOTE the parade is on the 5th a Monday, not to interfere with church services on Sunday the fourth.

We are making plans for our ‘Sounds on the Sounds’ ferry concert for September and once again the Dragons are BACK for our 7th Annual Dragon Boat Race Festival September 18th!

We all look forward for a level of normalcy and prosperous season.
