Hello Partners,

It used to be the case that your Chamber took a breather during the summer, as we typically only plan our larger events during the 3 other seasons…this is true, but our Village is busy and your Chamber has been very active!

To start with since our spring newsletter we have participated in 7 ribbon cuttings from new businesses to special anniversaries and accepted 13 new members!  We honored our PJCC member of the year Doug Quattrock at the annual member of the year reception sponsored by the Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce, where there were 165 guests representing 15 Chambers! Our general membership meetings have been well attended. We hosted the tri-chamber networking event shared with the 3-Village and Smithtown Chambers that was held at the Meadow Club. With 90 attendees we met outside in the beautiful appointed patio areas with passed hors-d’oeuvres and a BBQ.  Coming up is our Bi-Chamber Networking Event with the Patchogue Chamber at Port Jeff Bowl.  A friendly fun wagered bowling competition will take place and with more networking, scheduled for August 22nd.   Let’s also not forget our new member wine & cheese soirée for August 9th at the Chamber office! 

We have just finished another round of PSEG grant monies.  Seven applicants responded with their requests and were found to be eligible for beautification and outdoor commerce projects!  From updated pockets parks, audio equipment and a portable ice-cream dipping cabinet. Money approved close to $10,000 and your chamber was able to make these purchases and then receive their reimbursement!      

The Chamber also hosted ‘Meet the Candidate’ night for the PJ Village elections.  We congratulate  new Mayor Lauren Sheprow and welcome new trustee Bob Juliano as well as welcoming back Trustee Stan Loucks!  There is shifting of sands currently in the Village with new leadership. We are all adjusting and look forward to fresh viewpoints and mutual cooperation!

Congratulation to St. Charles Hospital with their major Emergency Department expansion!  The department will feature increased space of 4,000 square feet, 10 additional treatment bays, fast track/urgent care designated area and most needed for those seeking medically supervised chemical dependency detoxification treatment, their own separate waiting room. This 10 million dollar expansion will start August and hopefully be open summer of 2024!

The old Village Way FINALLY has positive movement!  John Sarno of Silver Linings Restaurant Group, who has interests with the Drift 82, Chop Steakhouse and Village Idiot will be opening their 4th restaurant, Castaways Port Jeff Steak & Seafood. Plans are they hope to be open in November.  We wish them well and breathing new life into an iconic location that that our Village has missed for MANY years!

In June, The Town of Brookhaven proclaimed that June 29th will be known as “Long Island Explorium Day.” This day was proclaimed in honor of the Long Island Explorium in Port Jefferson, which has always strived to provide a unique and engaging space for children and adults to discover the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through interactive exhibits, workshops, and educational programs.

New construction on the re-build of the old deli on the corner of Beach St. and W. Broadway!  Moving along well with beautifully new installed windows it has the permitted use for a new deli/restaurant; the building will also have 3 apartments with a shared sundeck and outdoor dining. Diana Aronica is the point person and the hopeful date for completion is the end of October! The Chamber wishes them well!

The Chamber will be working with the Village on 2 new endeavors, an economic development committee and a community organizational quarterly meeting.  We will also now partner with the Village and PJ BID in revamping the Harvest Festival scheduled for October 21st and 22nd .

The Chamber honored Roger Rutherford as retiring PJ BID President at his last BID meeting July 2th at Tommy’s Place.   He received proclamations from the Town of Brookhaven Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich, PJ Mayor Lauren Sheprow and of course your PJ Chamber.  We thanked him for his 30 years of service to the PJ community as a friend and colleague, including 15 years on the PJ BID board and 5 of those as President.  He now owns and has opened in Patchogue ‘Roger’s Desserts’ located on Main Street. Our chamber wishes him much success!
