Prioritizing accessibility at the new Archives & Museum
A space built for everyone

As construction continues at the site of the new Golden Plough Lodge (GPL) & Northumberland County Archives and Museum (NCAM) facility, our NCAM team has been planning enhancements to improve the inclusivity and accessibility of archive and museum services at their new space, expected to open in 2022.

The new NCAM facility will provide an inclusive and barrier-free space that includes:
  • Gender neutral universal washrooms with adult change tables
  • Accessible parking spaces and wayfinding signage
  • Power-assisted door operators
  • A wheelchair charging station
  • Adjustable lighting, tables and seating to ensure comfort for visitors
  • Accessible service counters, storage spaces, outdoor spaces and pathways
  • And more!

Our NCAM team is committed to ensuring that museum exhibits are able to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and abilities. Exhibits will be created in line with universal design standards where possible, and will meet or exceed accessibility standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). In addition, all interpretation and programming will be created with inclusivity as a priority, in consultation with the Northumberland County Accessibility Advisory Committee. We strive to ensure our programs and services are physically and intellectually equally accessible to all members of the community, including those with sensory sensitivities. As we continue to plan and prepare for the opening of the new NCAM space in 2022, we welcome feedback and thoughts from the community to further improve the inclusivity of our services.

Northumberland County, as a whole, is committed to removing barriers and improving access to all County services and facilities for people with disabilities. In alignment with this goal, we are currently gathering public feedback to help inform the development of our Multi-Year Accessibility Plan 2022-2025. We encourage you to share your feedback about the accessibility of our services and facilities by completing our online survey at JoinIn.Northumberland.ca by June 18th.
