A Note from the Director

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that for the past month I have been seeing red & pink hearts everywhere – candy boxes to indulge in, decorations to hang around the house, and tender cards to send to loved ones, or potential loved ones. Sending some love and making new connections is a wonderful idea, and often much needed during these bitterly cold winter months.

If you are looking for a way to send some love this Valentine season, the library has a challenge for you. We will be participating in the 18th Annual Boston Bruins PJ Drive from February 1st through March 15th. We will be collecting new pajamas for children living in low-income or houseless situations. By joining us in this drive, you will supply pajamas to children who need them most and provide warmth and a good night’s sleep. If you would like to donate, you can bring brand-new pajamas to the Children’s Room. You may even see some library staff wearing their PJs as we show our support for this worthy cause.

Another way that we have been making connections lately is through our Grafton Public Library Pen Pal Program. We have partnered with three other Graftons (in Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin) to introduce patrons with a patron from another Grafton Public Library. What a wonderful way to get to know what life in a different Grafton is like and make a new friend. We have just sent off the latest round of card and letters and will continue to do so through the end of March. The response to this brand-new program has been overwhelming, with 190 patrons participating from the four libraries, with 68 from our own Grafton Public Library. If you are participating, thank you – I would love to hear about your experiences. If you did not participate in this round but would like to in the future – we will be running this program again, keep an eye out for it.

The Other Black Girl

By Zakiya Dalil

Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW.

It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister

forces at play, she soon realizes that there’s a lot more at stake than just her career.

A whip-smart and dynamic thriller and sly social commentary that is perfect for anyone who has ever felt manipulated, threatened, or overlooked in the workplace, The Other Black Girl will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist.
