Lifelong Learning At The Library
|
|
No matter your age, occupation or lifestyle, lifelong learning is essential to your well being. Lifelong learning isn’t bound by a certain set of rules, it’s about improving your knowledge, skills and competence in any particular area, at every stage of your life. It can be informal or very structured, whether it be taking a class to learn a new language or surfing the web for information, anything that enriches your mind is a success. Our goal is to inspire and create a spark in each one of our patrons to continue their thirst for knowledge.
There are many different programs and services at the Greenburgh Public Library that will keep the student in you alive. Do you need to broaden your vocabulary? Join one of our

The Sketchbook Drawing and Art Group
, has been one of the library’s many vibrant learning communities. The group’s artists have been meeting regularly for years to learn new artistic techniques, expand their creative thinking, and to learn from one another. Lead by artist and Librarian Kate Colquitt, as well as several special guest artists, attendees have produced many beautiful works of art over the years. Pictured with their work are artists Diddy Gomerman (
From Here to Eternity)
, Lori Dotoratos
(Waiting)
, and Iris Farber
(Blue Hydrangea)
, who recently exhibited at the Beyond Boundaries show, a Greenburgh-wide art exhibition featuring older adult artists.

Homework Help and Toddler Learning Center!
|
The Library’s Youth Services Department is offering several new opportunities to help young learners in our community!
Does your child need help with homework? This school year the
Children’s Library
has introduced the
Homework Help Center
, which is designed for children in grades 1 through 5. Local high school students will serve as homework helpers who can assist students working through specific or difficult problems and questions. The center will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm in the Children’s Library. Spanish translators will be available on Tuesday nights for any student who may need one. Students must be accompanied by an adult. For more information and a complete list of dates visit the library’s
online calendar
.
Homework help is also available for teens! Over the summer the
Teen Library
introduced
peer-to-peer help for teens
who needed assistance with summer reading projects. This peer-to-peer help will continue into the fall for teens needing subject, homework, and test preparation help. If you are a teen looking for a peer tutor, or a teen interested in helping others by becoming a tutor, please visit our
calendar of events
for more information on how to connect with peer-to-peer tutoring. If you can't make it into the library, we also have
Tutor.com
for you to use!
Tutor.com
is a live, on-demand, one-on-one tutoring service for grades K - 1st year college, adult learners and job seekers.

While our littlest learners don’t need help with homework just yet, the
Children’s Library
has also been putting on some special programs for toddlers and their caregivers. Designed as a playgroup for ages 18 - 36 months, the
Toddler Learning Center
has been helping tots develop the foundations of learning and literacy skills through six weekly play sessions. In partnership with
Westchester Medical Center
, caregivers are also being introduced to a parenting topic facilitated by physicians from
WMC
. Topics have included safety, nutrition, sleep, and more. The program, grant funded by
Westchester Library System
, has limited capacity (
check our calendar for registration details
), but Youth Services hopes to continue the program at some point in the future.

A satisfying story of a family, the rise and fall of Minnesota breweries, women in a male-dominated field, hard work and persistence, and the effects of a little bit of money and a little bit of luck. Edith, Helen, and Diana are continually reinventing themselves to adapt to every changes
life brings.

Explore the hidden worlds beneath our feet, as Robert MacFarlane documents his adventures through underground cities, cenotes, prehistoric caves, and mines now being used for advanced scientific experiments. I was particularly captivated by his journey into the catacombs of Paris, where there is more life and activity beneath the surface than one would imagine!
