A Note from the Director

At the end of September, we began flood mitigation from the August 18 flooding that took place during an unprecedented storm. ServPro began demolition in the Community Room, Children’s Room and Children’s Program Room, Children’s Staff Workroom, and Children’s Storage Closet on Monday September 25; Preserve 24 will begin reconstruction as soon as possible. Reconstruction is expected to last 8-10 working days.

The Children’s Room remains closed to the public, with a selection of materials available in the Friends Corner (many thanks to our gracious Friends for temporarily relocating items and giving up this space!).

Community Meeting Room Reservations continue to be suspended until reconstruction is completed.

A profound thank you, again, goes to Town and Library staff who worked to minimize damage and salvage items. Our Town Insurance will cover the cost of remediation and replacing destroyed items.

We are evaluating doors, particularly gaskets on emergency exit doors, reviewing roof drainage and gutters, and scheduling cleaning of our underground drainage system, to assess if any of these features played a part in water pooling and entering the building.

I have signed up for the Coordinated Statewide Emergency Preparedness for Cultural Heritage in Massachusetts email list which is a resource for disaster preparedness, and am working to update our Procedures and Disaster Planning, as the Emergency Evacuation Plan does not address all potential issues. I will also be attended the virtual Northeast Summit on Climate Adaptation for Library Facilities.

This month, we are asking for your assistance with projects from several other Town Departments:

The Recreation Department, with support from ARPA funds, is engaging in a Recreation Facilities Strategic Plan. This plan is highlighting 6 of their current recreational assets, and will highlight current and future needs, recommendations, and short term and long term capital planning to improve these facilities. The first step in the process is resident feedback. Our consultant, Activitas Inc., has prepared a survey to get feedback from community members on facility and field usage. Please take the survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GL2JBWZ.

The Town of Grafton is updating its municipal Master Plan. Join

the Planning Department to voice your ideas and concerns about Grafton's future- including transportation, economic development, housing, and town services. A second Community Workshop is scheduled for Thursday October 19 from 6-8 PM at Grafton High School; pizza and kids activities will be provided. This second workshop will dive deeper into findings from the first workshop and the Master Plan survey. Visit https://www.graftonmasterplan.com/ for more information and to RSVP.

Expansion Update

The Library Planning and Building Committee will post a meeting as soon as we have the final Pay Application from CTA construction, TBD. Please check the Town website for the posted agenda!

Zoom Link remains the same.

The Final Girl Support Group

By Grady Hendrix

A fast-paced, thrilling horror novel that follows a group of heroines to die for, from the brilliant New York Times bestselling author of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. In horror movies, the final girl is the one who's left standing when the credits roll. The one who fought back, defeated the killer, and avenged her friends. The one who emerges bloodied but victorious, a victim and a hero. But after the sirens fade and the audience moves on, what happens to her? Lynnette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre twenty-two years ago, and it has defined every day of her life since. And she's not alone. For more than a decade she's been meeting with five other actual final girls

and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, putting their lives back together, piece by piece. That is until one of the women misses a meeting and Lynnette's worst fears are realized--someone knows about the group and is determined to take their lives apart again. But the thing about these final girls is that they have each other now, and no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife . . . they will never, ever give up. Trustees Update

The Board of Library Trustees passed an Art Exhibit and Display Policy and a Food, Beverage and Kitchen Use Policy at their last meeting, and we are in process of adding them to our website. The BoLT Policy Subcommittee meets via Zoom at 7 PM on Wednesday October 11.

BoLT is in process of hiring a consultant to facilitate our Long Range Planning Process, and are still taking applications for at-large members for the planning committee. Interested parties can complete a volunteer application online at https://graftonlibrary.org/volunteer.

The next Board of Library Trustees (BoLT) meeting is Wednesday October 25 at 7 PM in person at the Municipal Center, Conference Room A.
