A Note from the Director

Do you remember the old commercial encouraging you to not leave home without a certain credit card? The idea being that this card is so valuable and enables you to do so much, it would be foolhardy not to

1) have one

and

2) use it often.

Well, September is National Library Card Sign Up Month, an annual event started in 1987 intended to promote obtaining a library card and reminding everyone, current library users as well as new card holders, how valuable a library card is. It is not by accident that this promotion corresponds with the beginning of the school year because librarians want to emphasize the important role a library plays in the development and education of children.

We all know that a library card can get you books, but it can provide so much more as well. The Grafton Public Library also offers DVDs, passes to museums, video & traditional games and puzzles, CDs, audiobooks, cake pans, tutorial help, engaging programs, expertise and assistance from our library staff, and a safe place to explore wherever our curious dreams make take us.

As school supplies go, there are none more cost-effective than a library card.

For those of us whose ‘school days’ are behind us, the library still offers many opportunities to stretch our minds and explore new interests.

Library cards are free and provide access to physical materials at the library as well as 24-hour access to online resources. Stop by the library to register for a card, or perhaps renew one that is no longer valid – or simply to explore some of the wonderful resources that are available to you in the library. If you would like a tour guide, I would be happy to show you around.

Building Update

Work on the library cupola is just about completed and we are almost ready to display it proudly atop our building, sans scaffolding. I know it has been quite a while that the cupola was obscured, but it can now stand in its original glory.

Work on the Children’s Room, too, is well on its way and we are hopeful that by the end of this month we will be able to welcome children and their caregivers back. The carpet has been installed, the shelving units are back in place – we just need to tidy up the place to make it ‘patron ready.’ There are a LOT of books on those shelves, and in all the moving around, not all of them are still in order. As soon as the room is ready to welcome the public back in, we will fling those doors wide open. It has been a long year, and frustrating for everyone involved, but I know that when the room has reopened, with everything fixed properly and professionally, we will all celebrate.
