In this issue we will highlight the very timely topic of “Myopia Management”. With several soft multifocals currently being used for this purpose and an ever-increasing introduction of orthokeratology lens designs, the myopia control arena is growing rapidly.
More and more eye care professionals (ECPs) are recognizing the importance of slowing down myopia progression in young people. They know that otherwise their patients are at much greater risk of serious eye conditions to include myopic macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, and glaucoma, and are, therefore, incorporating some form of contact lenses – sometimes in conjunction with low dose atropine – to help better the future quality of life of their patients.
Perhaps the foremost expert in the world in this area is Dr. Jeff Walline and two weeks ago he presented an exceptional webinar entitled: “Myopia Management Update” which is currently archived under “Webinars” on the home page (GPLI.info). If there is a study pertaining to children and contact lenses it is likely his fingerprints are all over it. His studies have included CLAMP, CLIP, CRAYON, COOKI, CAKE, CLASIC, ACHIEVE, and most recently the BLINK Study. The latter multicenter study, recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, compared the effectiveness and patient satisfaction of different soft multifocal add powers for children, ultimately recommending the high add power.
Dr. Walline is currently Secretary-Treasurer of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) where he is a Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact Lenses & Refractive Technologies (CCLRT) Section. He is past Chair of the AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section (CLCS) and in the past year has received the highest honor from both the AOA CLCS (Dr. Donald Korb Award) and AAO CCLRT (the Max Schapero Memorial Award).

The following areas were discussed in this presentation:
1. Spectacle Myopia Control
2. Soft Multifocal Myopia Control
3. Orthokeratology Myopia Control
=====a. Which is better: multifocal or orthokeratology: very similar and should be ==========selected based upon the patient’s lifestyle after presenting options
4. Atropine Myopia Control
=====a. Atropine effectively controls myopia progression but questionable control of ==========eye growth
=====b. Combination treatment is effective
5. Combination Therapies
6. Atropine Onset Delay
7. Outdoor Time Onset Delay
8. Effect of Onset Delay
9. Clinical Pearls
=====a. Offer all options to patient
=====b. Spectacle option not currently available in US
=====c. Spending time outdoors delays onset, not slows progression
=====d. Only say what we can do on average
=====e. Combination treatment (OK + A) is beneficial
=====f. Should be offered to all myopes
Overall, Dr. Walline’s presentation reviewed clinical studies that showed just how effective every treatment is and followed that up with how you should utilize these treatments in clinical practice as well as how to effectively communicate these options to your patients.

In Memorium: Harold Davis OD, FAAO
As we were going to press on the newsletter, we learned that contact lens icon, Dr. Harold Davis, passed away at the age of 98.
Dr. Davis established one of the first contact lens specialty practices in the country and practiced optometry for almost three-quarters of a century, retiring recently after beginning practice in 1946. He graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry and founded Davis EyeCare in Oak Lawn, IL
He was a prolific clinical researcher who has served as past president of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists. He has been awarded the Achievement Award from the AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section, the Lifetime Service Award from the Illinois College of Optometry, and the Distinguished Practitioner recognition from the National Academies of Practice. Among his survivors is another icon in the contact lens profession, Dr. Rob Davis, who is a member of the Board of Directors for the GP lens Institute and is a former GPLI Practitioner of the Year.

SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCES:
MYOPIA MANAGEMENT
The GPLI has a number of resources pertaining to myopia management including many webinars. Not only is Dr. Walline’s August webinar available but there are also recent webinars pertaining to orthokeratology including Dr. Michael Lipson (March, 2021) and Dr. Bruce Morgan (December, 2020).
In addition, there are multiple consumer brochures including “Myopia Management” - developed by Dr. Walline - which discusses both the benefits of controlling myopia progression as well as the methods and how effective they are.
