GPLI Educational Spotlight:

The Global Specialty Lens Symposium
The Global Specialty Lens Symposium will be held next week, Thursday evening, January 21st through Saturday, January 23rd. The program is virtual this year but – as in past years – the program includes very timely specialty contact lens forums, workshops, and lectures presented by the leading experts in the world. Registration to this event is free. Register Now

Once again, the GPLI will be a Gold sponsor of GSLS. Please visit us at our virtual exhibit booth. In this booth, we will have a series of video presentations highlighting our most popular resources and programs. We are also responsible for a series of three courses – including two workshops – at GSLS. On Thursday night at 5:15PM EST, the Irregular Cornea Part 1 workshop will be given. Dr. Stephanie Woo will have patients in her practice wearing small corneal, intralimbal, and custom soft lenses and – via modern technology – attendees will be able to view what Dr. Woo is viewing through the biomicroscope. Dr. Elise Kramer and I will assist Dr. Woo in the discussion of the evaluation and management of each patient.

At 7PM, we will present the Irregular Cornea Part 2 workshop in which Dr. Woo will have scleral, custom scleral, and hybrid-wearing patients.

Finally, on Saturday at 10:45am, I will be presenting the “GP Update” course in which updates on current trends in GP lenses, including myopia management, sclerals, multifocals, torics, irregular cornea, and spherical lenses will be presented.

The GSLS, of course, will emphasize GP and custom soft lenses in both their general sessions and breakout CE courses. In addition to the the GPLI-hosted workshop programs, both scleral lens programs (hosted by the Scleral Lens Education Society) and orthokeratology programs will be presented on Thursday evening. Friday’s sessions will include a presentation by Dr. Woo and Dr. Kramer on building a specialty contact lens practice. This was a very popular GPLI webinar in 2020 and will benefit anyone desiring to build their specialty lens practice. Hybrid lenses for pediatrics will be given by GPLI Advisory Board member Dr. Melanie Frogozo with Dr. Stephanie Fromstein, whose national board preparation webinar is still our most-attended GPLI student-based program. Friday will conclude with the ever-popular scleral lens supersession, moderated by Dr. Lynette Johns and including a “Who’s Who” in scleral lenses as the panel. The Saturday program will include programs on myopia management, telemedicine and scleral lenses, orthokeratology, keratoconus, and specialty lens fitting via profilometry.

The GSLS Educator's Power Hour will be on Friday, January 22, from 10:45 am to 11:45 am eastern time. Any contact lens faculty; along with the GPLI/CLMA Board of Directors are invited to attend and participate in this Power Hour of information. More info and the link to join will be forthcoming.

GPLI Resources Spotlight:

The GPLI is excited to announce the initiation of a development campaign to begin in Spring, 2021. Under the direction of Development Committee Chair, Sara Yost (CEO of BostonSight), with committee members including Dr. Rob Davis (Oak Lawn, IL), Jan Svochak (Tru-Form Optics), and Ron Walker (developed allaboutvision.com), this program will allow us to expand our workshop programs and introduce several additional benefits and programs. More information will be forthcoming soon.

Our popular GPLI Toric and Spherical Lens Calculator is temporarily not functioning due to the discontinuation of Flash at the end of 2020. We hope to have it back up and running soon and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

GPLI Advisory Board Spotlight

The GP Lens institute is very proud of our Advisory Board who contribute on a regular basis to our programs, resources, articles, and webinars. They are among the most prominent and respected contact lens specialists in the world. In 2021, we are adding five new members whom we will highlight in the next several newsletter. In this edition, Drs. Anita Gulmiri and Daddi Fadel will be featured.

===Anita Gulmiri, OD============= Daddi Fadel, DOptom
Every August the GPLI provides a comprehensive 3 – 4 day symposium/workshop program to cornea and contact lens residents. Many of our rising stars are identified at this program and every year we add one or more former residents to our Advisory Board. It was evident early on that Dr. Anita Gulmiri would be someone who was going to have an impact on our profession. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry (NECO) and went on to pursue a Residency in Cornea/Contact Lens following graduation. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at the New England College of Optometry (NECO) and serves as the Residency Supervisor for NECO’s Cornea and Contact Lens residency program. She is also an Instructor of Ophthalmology and Director of Contact Lens Services at Boston University Eye Associates, Boston Medical Center. Dr. Gulmiri specializes in fitting and managing medically necessary and specialty contact lens designs for those patients suffering from irregular corneal and ocular surface disease. One of her growing passions has been working with Greater Boston’s pediatric providers in fitting orthokeratology for Myopia management and growing NECO’s Myopia Control Clinic. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and has been very involved in GPLI programs associated with NECO.

As the GP Lens Institute continues to have more of an educational presence worldwide it is evident that our Advisory Board needs to reflect that. Therefore, it was an easy decision to add Daddi Fadel DOptom, FSLS, FBCLA, FAAO, a renown contact lens designer, pioneer of modern lens designs, and a specialist in contact lenses for irregular cornea, scleral lenses, myopia control, and orthokeratology. She has 20 years’ experience in optometry and specialty contact lenses. She manages an optometric practice specializing in contact lenses in Italy where she personally designs and fits special customized contact lenses. She is internationally recognized as a key opinion leader, who has several peer-reviewed publications in the area of specialty contact lenses and is a speaker in national and international symposia. She is a Fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society (SLS), British Contact Lens Association (BCLA), and American Academy of Optometry (AAO). She is the Founder and Immediate Past President of Accademia Italiana Lenti Sclerali (AILeS), Co-founder and President of Euro & Austral-Asia Scleral Lens Academy (EASLA), Council of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists (ISCLS), member of the medical advisory board of the International Keratoconus Academy (IKA), Program & Education Chair of The Summit of Specialty Contacts (SSC) and of the Global Ophthalmic Women (GLOW), Board Member of the International Forum for Scleral Lens Research (IFSLR) and of the International Congress of Scleral Contact (ICSC), Clinical Advisor of Myopia Care, International Relations Chair of the Scleral Lens Education Society (SLS), and Member of the International Association of Contact Lens Educator (IACLE).
