The GP Lens Institute is moving in a very positive direction in 2023, in large part due to the generosity of the CLMA members listed above and the support of many of our eye care professionals (ECPs) who believe strongly in the GP and custom soft lens education of our students, staff, and ECPs. Our team, including Associate Director Dr. Tom Quinn, Development and Marketing Coordinator Beth Anderzhon, Vice-President of the Board of Directors, Derrell James, Secretary-Treasurer John Hibbs, and our entire Board of Directors – highlighted later in this issue – are contributing greatly to our forward progress. Our 2023 GPLI Advisory Board – to be announced in the February newsletter – includes seven exceptional new members highlighted below. Of course, we appreciate the efforts of our committee members and chairs.
In this issue we will highlight two exceptional webinars: “Specialty Contact Lens Fitting in Pediatrics” by Dr. Jennifer Fogt and our quarterly student-based webinar – the highest attended webinar in our history - “NBEO Contact Lens Review” from Drs. Dawn Lam, Erin Rueff, and Lindsay Sicks. We are excited about our ECP membership program and we have had a very good response in just the past two weeks. We offer 13 benefits for a nominal fee including several COPE-approved webinars beginning with February’s webinar “Advancements in Scleral Lenses” from Dr. Greg DeNaeyer. The very clinically-oriented online bimonthly journal: “The Advisor” with Editors Drs. Jennifer Harthan and Melanie Frogozo – with assistance from Dr. Tom Quinn – is another outstanding benefit.
Finally, the GPLI was once again a Gold Sponsor of the Global Specialty Lens Symposium (GSLS). We sponsored several hours of education, the registration on one educator per college of optometry, and honored some very special people at our Rising Stars reception.

SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION Part 1:
"Specialty Contact Lens Fitting in Pediatrics"
Jennifer Fogt, OD, MS, FAAO, FSLS
| | |
For anyone interested in fitting pediatric contact lenses this is a “must see” presentation. Dr. Fogt previously practiced at Pediatric Ophthalmology Associates in Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH where she founded and directed the Pediatric Contact Lens Services. She is currently on the faculty of The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Her presentation was very clinical, and reflected both her knowledge and passion for fitting pediatric patients into contact lenses. It included the following “Top Ten” topics:
1) Why fit pediatric contact lenses? Obviously, you change the future quality of their life by minimizing or preventing amblyopia.
2) Infantile/pediatric aphakia: contact lens options and their applications and benefits, including handling:
- Silicone elastomer contact lenses
- GP contact lenses
- Soft custom hydrogel or silicone hydrogel lenses
3) Process for infant contact lens fittings (or under age of 2)
4) Evaluating and dispensing contact lenses for infants
5) Fitting contact lenses for aphakia
6) Child with anisometropia
7) High refractive error
8) Scarred/irregular cornea
9) Nystagmus
10) Fitting tips for all pediatric lenses

SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION Part 2:
"NBEO Contact Lens Review"
Dawn Lam, OD, FAAO; Erin Rueff, OD, PhD, FAAO; Lindsay Sicks, OD, FAAO
| | |
This webinar was attended by no less than 566 students and they definitely benefitted. This 2 hour and 15 minute presentation was extremely well presented, organized, and comprehensive. It is “must see TV” for any student preparing to take the NBEO Part One examination. We have hosted two previous NBEO contact lens reviews (Dr. Stephanie Fromstein, January, 2019 and myself in January, 2018) that were both thorough and well attended. That said, this presentation was exceptional. The topics included the following:
1) Contact lens optics
2) Contact lens parameters
3) GP lens fitting
4) Soft contact lens fitting
5) Soft lens complications
6) GP lens complications
7) Cornea, corneal disease, and contact lenses
8) Lens solution science and preservatives
The attendees were also informed of the two following archived webinars that would represent “Must See TV”:
“Finding the Practice of Your Dreams” with Dr. David Seibel (April 2020)
“Why You Should Consider an Optometric Residency” with Drs. Sydni Davis, Tiffany Andrzejewski, Carl Kramer, and Madison Moss (October 2021)
