GRAD CLAS NOTES

Summer Studies at Villanova

At Villanova in the summer, the pace may be a bit more relaxed, but our students and faculty are still conducting important scholarship and building connections that will help them in their careers and throughout their lives. Our students participate in summer internships, research fellowships and courses. Summer is also a great time to travel, whether it is for a conference, research or to explore that new destination on your bucket list!

For our students who graduated this May, I want to thank you for all your tremendous contributions to our Villanova community. I am inspired by your passion for scholarship and your commitment to working to make our world a better place. You always have a home at Villanova, and, even after graduation, services such as the Nova Network and the Career Center can help you navigate your academic and professional career.

To our recently enrolled students – welcome! We are excited for you to begin your graduate studies at Villanova and we look forward to meeting you in the coming months. In this newsletter, we will share grad studies news, research and enrichment opportunities, and helpful tips throughout the year.

Wherever your summer journey takes you, physically or intellectually, I wish you the very best!

New Paper by Villanova Counseling Professors Suggests Client-Centered Shifts in Diagnostic Models
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a guidebook so embedded into the US healthcare system that all mental health professionals—from counselors to social workers—must assign clients a DSM-generated diagnosis in order to receive reimbursement for their services. A new paper by Villanova professors Krista Malott, PhD, and Terence Yee, PhD, along with a colleague from New Zealand, critically evaluate this model. In their paper, published in the International Journal for the Advancement of Counseling, the authors identify key flaws of the DSM model and process, particularly in regard to the embeddedness of assumptions that fail to take into account the broad diversity of human norms, cultures and life experiences.
