From the Principal

Lets talk about common sense today.  We all know about the kid who stuck his tongue on a frozen metal pole just because some other kids dared him to.  Kids tell other kids to do crazy things all the time.  Kids do crazy things without thinking. Common sense is often a kid's first line of defense against falling for bad ideas.  One of the most important things kids can learn is common sense.  Common sense is a lens that we look at our actions through.  Our sense of common sense tells us if our actions are in line with what is normal or if they are 'uncommon'.  So when kids are doing something they shouldn't, we often ask them if their actions pass the common sense test.  We ask them to think about what might happen if they continue or what would happen if everyone acted like they are acting.  Of course, dealing with kids like this is just common sense.

Research shows that a child's sense of common sense is influenced by many competing voices.  For today's children, media plays a powerful role in developing a child's sense of what is normal.  So does school.  So do parents.  So do peers.  At Grand Rapids Christian Schools we trust God's word to guide our common sense.  I could go on here but I think my point is made.  Parents that want their children to develop common sense that is guided by God's word surround their children with people that live according to God's word.  They minimize the influence the world has on their children.  Churches and Christian schools are great place to find people with common sense rooted in God's word.  This is a great reason to feel good about sending your child to this Christian school.

No GR Public bussing dates
Please note there will be no GR Public School bussing on the following dates:
November 7 & 8
January 16
February 6
March 24
Be sure to make alternate transportation arrangements if your child rides a GR Public School bus.  GR  Christian buses will run as usual.  There is no car line pick up on the above dates.  Plan on picking up students in the gym.  Carpooling is a great idea to minimize parking lot congestion.

Street Parking Restrictions from the City of Grand Rapids
A sure sign of the coming winter begins Tuesday, Nov. 1, as street parking restrictions begin once again in Grand Rapids. Odd-Even and Same Side parking restrictions take effect from 12:01am on Nov. 1, 2016 until 11:59pm on April 1, 2017. Odd-Even parking restrictions mean that, on each even numbered day, starting at 1am and until 6pm, parking is prohibited on the odd numbered side of the street. On each odd numbered day, starting at 1am and until 6pm, parking is prohibited on the even numbered side of the street. From 6pm to 1am, the next day parking is PERMITTED on both sides of the street unless signs restrict parking.

Same Side parking restrictions require that residents only park on a designated side of the street from Nov. 1 to April 1. On some of the narrowest of streets, parking may not be allowed at all. This practice allows for removal of debris and snow plowing and helps to keep one lane of traffic open and available for emergency and public service vehicles.

Bethany Christian Services is actively seeking foster families for the Transitional Foster Care (TFC) program. TFC is a specialized foster care program that serves unaccompanied minors.  The unaccompanied children range in age from infants to 17 years old, but most are under 12 years old.  They may include sibling groups, family groups, or young mothers with their baby.  The majority of the children come from Central America, most often from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico.   The children make this journey for various reasons: to flee gangs and violence, to escape abuse, abandonment, or neglect, or to reunify with family living in the U.S.  Children in this program often have experienced trauma and have limited knowledge of the U.S. culture and English language.

During their time in Transitional Foster Care, the children will attend an on-site school, receive medical care, therapeutic services, legal consultation, and live with a licensed foster family.  Due to the transitional nature of the program, children are usually in care for a shorter amount of time, ranging anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.  These children need a temporary home that is stable, nurturing, and understanding of the difficulties they may have endured, as well as the cultural shock they are navigating.  Please consider this opportunity and contact us soon if you are interested!
