From the Principal

Looking Ahead
As the 2018/19 school year comes to a close, we immediately start thinking about how we can better serve our students next fall. We are excited about two changes that we believe will better help us achieve our mission.

First of all, we will better partner with our student body as we reimagine our student leadership structure. Currently, each grade of student congress works independently and primarily works to plan and manage events. Next year, our congress will move to a branch system that aligns our student leaders with their passions and gifts as they partner with administration, faculty, and staff. The five branches with representatives from each grade are:
  1. Spiritual formation
  2. Service
  3. Hospitality & Inclusion
  4. School Spirit
  5. Events & Activities
We are so proud that roughly 130 current 9th - 11th graders pursued this opportunity! We look forward to getting each one of these students involved in some way whether they were elected or not. Click here to see the 19/20 elected student congress!

We are also excited about some slight changes to our daily schedule that will better serve our students. To better infuse our faith into our daily schedule, we will have two shorter chapels each week. The first chapel will likely be a traditional chapel with a short talk and some worship. The second chapel will be called "community time" and will rotate between small group time, praise and worship, and any necessary assemblies. We also will have two shorter late starts to give teachers more frequent opportunities to analyze student data in their teams. Check out the new schedule here!

On a personal note, I want to say "thank you" for your prayers and support during my first year as principal. It's a privilege to walk alongside our students and families as we celebrate good times and struggle through the tough times. I'm so grateful for this school and our community of faith! I pray that summer is a restful, rejuvenating time for each GRCHS family.

High School News

Attention Junior Parents:  Please check your email for info on next year's overnight Senior Retreat on August 17-18. Students were given a permission form at an informational meeting. Please return those to Mrs. Rhodes in the high school main office along with payment ASAP. 

ParentVue Verification was due this week.  Did you complete the ParentVUE Verification Process?  If not, please take a few minutes to complete it now. Log into  ParentVUE , click on Online Verification in the upper righthand corner, and follow the instructions on the screen.  While you can access ParentVUE on your mobile device, verification is not available in the app and works best when done on a computer.  This process must be completed in order for your child to be placed on a class list and/or bus route for 2019-2020 and for your Smart Tuition account to be set up correctly.
 
Graduation Rehearsal is at noon on May 28 at Calvary Church (707 E Beltline Ave NE). All Seniors who are walking in the graduation ceremony are required to attend. Students who are attending the All Night Party should arrive at 11:30am with their bags to check in. 

Graduation is May 28 at 8pm at Calvary Church:   Admission is by ticket only. If you have tickets you will not be using, please return those to the high school office, we have families who can use them. Thanks!

End of Year Book Returns: As a reminder, all books must be turned in to teachers before students can take their final exams (books may be turned in the morning of the exam). Students will not be permitted to take their exam if they have not turned in their booksIf a book is lost or missing, students should see Mrs. VanderWilp right away.

Underclassmen Exam Schedule: 
Second Semester 9-11th grade exams are Tuesday - Friday May 28-31. Two exams are scheduled each day. 
  • The first exam begins at 8:00am, students must stay in the classroom until at least 9:15 and may stay until 9:30.
  • The second exam of the day begins at 9:45; students must stay until 11:00 and may stay until 11:15.
Students are required to be present only for the exams they have scheduled (e.g. if a student has a first period class and a second period study hall, the student may leave for the day at 9:15/9:30).
Buses will run on their normal morning schedules and will depart from GRCHS at 11:20 following the second exam.

Weds: 3rd and 4th hr
Thurs: 5th and 6th hr
Friday: 7th and 8th hr

You are invited to attend Chamber Chorale's year-end "Encore" concert on Thursday, May 30, 7pm, Calvin College Recital Hall (inside the Covenant Fine Arts Center). We will sing favorites from the whole year through and honor our fantastic Seniors in their last performance! 

Medications: Parents, if your student has medication(s), an epipen or inhaler that was kept in the school office this year, please claim those items. No medications shall remain in the building over the summer so we ask that you pick those up before the end of the school year or they will be disposed of properly. If you have any concerns, please contact the school office at 574-5500.

Lost and Found: Students were reminded to clean out their lockers and claim any items in the lost and found before leaving for the summer. Items not claimed by May 31st will be donated to New2You. 
 
Summer Session: At Grand Rapids Christian Schools, we believe a student's learning and growth does not stop when second semester ends. Summer Session is an exciting way at Grand Rapids Christian High for students to participate in fun enrichment and immersion activities during the summer and earn high school credit. Incoming 9th - 12th grade students can participate in Courses, Workshops, College Prep Activities, and Drivers Training.

There are many great reasons to take a class during Summer Session:
  • For new students - get a taste of academics at Grand Rapids Christian High School. Make a few friends before high school starts!
  • Get ahead on graduation requirements.
  • Make room in your normal school-year schedule for electives and Advanced Placement classes.
  • Take unique classes that aren't offered during the school year.
  • Demonstrate to colleges that you invested in summer enrichment.
  • Prepare for college entrance exams.
  • Incoming Freshmen: Two courses were added to the offerings a bit later than others. If you're interested in getting connected, getting ahead, or freeing up space in your busy first-year schedule, talk to your counselor about Literary Genres or Old Testament Studies today!

Plans for Winterim 2020 are already underway! Students have signed up for trips, intern hosts are already being contacted, and we've started to build the course catalogue!  Winterim at GRCHS engages students in a two-week amplified learning experience that unveils their unique passions and abilities, preparing them to be effective servants of Christ in contemporary society.

New Additions to the GRCHS Family

Inclusion Coordinator


We are excited to welcome Missy Meekhof as our next Inclusion Coordinator. Missy has 10 years of experience working with students who have learning differences. Her most recent experience has been with the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District where she served in a variety of capacities. Missy has already started to transition to her new role and will be in the office full time starting August 12. Missy and her family are members of Harvest Bible Chapel, where she has served as Special Needs Coordinator for several years. She and her husband Adrian have been married for 15 years and have two children, Caitalyn (9) and Easton (8).

Spanish Teachers

We welcome two new Spanish Teachers to our world language department!


Kate Avila will be teaching Spanish 2 and 4 as well as the 9th grade Spanish Immersion course.
Before coming to GRCHS, Kate taught three years of elementary and middle school Spanish at Grandville Christian, was a graduate assistant at MSU, and even had a long term substitute teaching position here at GRCHS in the spring of 2010. For the last nine years, Kate has been teaching at South Christian High School. Kate and Mariano, her husband of 12 years, are members of Boston Square CRC. They live in SE Grand Rapids with their two children, Isabel (6) and Mariano (2). Isabel is a student at GRCES Iroquois. Kate's love of the Spanish language came from traveling and meeting new people. She spent two semesters studying in Spain and then continued to learn with her Avila family.



Raquel Rodriguez will be teaching Spanish 3 and 4 as well as Spanish Immersion Speech and Bible classes. Previously, Raquel taught Spanish 2, 3, and AP Spanish Literature and Culture at the high school level. Most recently, she taught Spanish Immersion 6th grade Bible, Social Studies, and Spanish at our very own GRCMS! Raquel and her husband, Ronald, have two daughters, Aurora Camille (2), and Lyla Evelyn (1). Raquel was born in Puerto Rico and spent most of her childhood there. She studied at Western Michigan University and spent a semester studying abroad in Burgos, Spain. She loves cooking and learning about different cultures!

Student Laptop Turn In - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
As the end of the school year approaches, these are the details for the Turn In of school laptops.
Turn In Dates:
  • Begins Tuesday, May 28.
  • DEADLINE by 1:00pm on the last day of exams, Friday, May 31.
Turn In Location: Learning Commons
The laptop, power supply, and plastic cover pieces MUST be turned in.

Missing parts: DO NOT purchase any parts to replace missing ones; we will not accept them. The reasons for this  are many, including the need to maintain product consistency, for warranty/Apple Care purposes, and to maintain  product integrity for the next student who might get the machine the next school year. Any replacement costs  we assess are based on the price we pay to replace the part; there is no markup.
ALL pieces MUST be turned in TOGETHER OR with MONEY to replace any missing pieces.

(1) laptop $800.00
(2) power adapter $65.00
(3) AC wall plug (duckhead) $10.00
Damage costs: Payment is due two weeks after receipt of our invoice.

Late turn ins
  • The laptop will be remotely disabled, and left useless on the due date and time.
  • A fine of $5.00 per day will be assessed if everything is not returned on time.
The LINE GETS LONG as your last day of school approaches; think about turning the laptop in as soon as you can.

Technology Equipment Sales: Our yearly technology sale will be held at GRCHS in the All City Gym entry off Plymouth on June 6 from 12:00 - 4:00, and June 7 from 7:30 - 1:00. All devices are sold as is with no support.

GRCHS Athletics

All incoming 9th Grade Girls: If you are interested in playing and learning a fantastic, lifelong, outdoor sport and meeting great, new friends across the whole high school, then join the GRCHS Girls Golf Team this summer/fall season.  We have a JV and Varsity team and we will begin practice together on Monday, August 12.  For more information about the team or about summer playing and learning opportunities, please email Coach Davies at  sdavies@grcs.org 

Attention all girls interested in learning and improving cheerleading skills in grades 5-12:
There will be four weeks of summer cheer clinics at Grand Rapids Christian High
School this summer.  They will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays of the last two weeks in  June and the last two weeks in July.

Time : 10:45 - 12:45 p.m.
Place :  Quest Center
Cost:  $40 (Four one-hour gymnastic sessions, one session per week, will be offered @  $10/ each with Randy Owens, gymnastic instructor from For the Kidz Gymnastics.)
Development of cheer skills, jumps, and stunting, gymnastics, and strength and conditioning  with Daimond Dixon will be the focus of the clinics.

Attention all girls going into 9th - 12th grade who are interested in cheering for Grand 
Rapids Christian's football sideline team in the fall:
Tryouts will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at 10 a.m.  It would be very helpful to participate in  the Summer Cheer Clinics during which cheer skills, jump skills, stunting, gymnastics, and  strength/conditioning will be taught! Team Camp, for those interested in either Sideline Cheer or Competitive Cheer, is August 16 and 17 at Grandville's Cheer Center at Prairie View School.

Sports Physicals:  Students planning to play sports at Grand Rapids Christian High School in 2019-20 school year need to have a MHSAA physical form on file with the high school athletic office before they are allowed to participate. A valid physical for 2019-20 must be completed anytime after April 15, 2019. You may turn in the completed physical to the GRCHS athletic office as soon as you finish it, even if it is before the end of this school year or during the summer. You may pick up a physical form at the GRCHS athletic office, or print out a physical form here.  This form must be completed with all signatures in order to participate in sports at GRCHS. You may attach your doctor's office physical form for the doctor portion of this form but the parent portion and signatures need to be completed on this form.

International Student Program

Exciting hosting opportunity with the International Student Program! We have two fine young men entering 11th grade, one from China and one from Vietnam, who currently need a host family for the upcoming school year. If you are interested or know anyone who might be, please let us know as we would love to share more information.  Host families receive training and a monthly stipend. GRCHS Lunch Program


There is no lunch service during exam week. The coffee shop will be open from 7:30-10am.

Lunch Account Balances: The end of school year seems to go very fast. Just a reminder that we do  not refund lunch balances . We do transfer balances to siblings of seniors and other family members. It's important to watch your balances these last few months. Thank you for giving us the privilege of serving your students each day. 

A Michigan Dept of Education policy states negative lunch balances may not roll over to the following school year. All balances must be paid by the end of the school year. 
Please take a moment to check your child's lunch account. Payments can be made online at sendmoneytoschool.com or drop off a check or cash at the high school office.

Congratulations Mrs. VanderLaan! Mrs. Denise VanderLaan, the middle school Inclusion Coordinator, will be retiring in June after 22 years of teaching. The Sexual Assault Prevention Action Team of Kent County (SAPAT) presents: 'Let's Talk', a series designed for parents to increase knowledge and comfort discussing serious topics with their children. Topics include Bullying & Harassment, Consent, and Drugs & Alcohol. These events are free, click here for information and to register.

Administrative Assistant Needed: LaGrave Ave. Christian Reformed Church, a large church in the downtown Heartside area, has an opening for a part-time (20-25 hours a week) administrative assistant to join our 12+ staff that supports each other and shares camaraderie. Duties include answering phones, greeting members & visitors, maintaining the church calendar/schedule, database and clerical functions.
