Getting Your Dock Ready for the Season
Before you venture out on the waters for the new season, it's time to give your dock some attention. With Spring just around the corner, you need to ensure your dock is in good working condition and safe for you and your family to use, so make sure you check things out now, so that needed repairs can be made before the season begins.

  • Check the cables and anchor points to ensure that all is properly secured and no weld points are broken.
  • The connection points for the walkway and PWC platforms need to be checked to ensure they are properly secured to the dock.
  • Check decking and boards to ensure they are not loose or need to be replaced. Ensure there are no trip hazards.
  • Check lights, switches and plugs for electrical devices, as well as for frayed wiring.
  • Check the GFCI for electrical outlets to ensure they work.
  • Ensure flotation is still adequate and vegetation is removed from Styrofoam.
  • Ensure solar lights that mark the dock still work.
  • Check for hazards underneath the dock and clear woody or other debris.
  • Check the pressure on your fire extinguishers to ensure they are properly charged.
  • Ensure the dock lines are in good condition and that cleats are securely attached.

In order to ensure your dock remains on the water as a legal structure on the lake, there are other things to consider this time of year.

1)      Is your dock properly permitted?
2)      Do you have your dock sticker properly posted on the dock?
3)      Have you had it electrically inspected?

These are all important questions, especially for those who may be planning to sell a dock with lake property. That is because you must have a properly permitted dock to help make the property transition process a smooth one, and with thousands of private docks around the lake shores and thousands of property owners, this transition process takes place a lot.

However, whether or not you plan to buy or sell a dock, GRDA reminds you that a proper electrical inspection is still important. After a long winter of wave and wind action on the dock, it’s a good idea to have a licensed electrician check it out, to make sure that all electrical connections and components are still in place and in good working order. Just as you inspect your boat and get it ready for the boating season, you should do the same thing with your dock’s electric system. Please take that precaution if you plan on spending time on your dock this summer.

If you have questions about dock permitting you can always contact the GRDA Lake Permitting office at (918) 256 0852 or you can stop by the GRDA Ecosystems and Education Center in Langley.

GRDA Premier of New
Water Documentary Scheduled
A new documentary, detailing the importance of the Grand and Illinois River watersheds, is scheduled for a public viewing on March 25th.

Entitled Our Borrowed Water , the film takes a closer look at some of the issues surrounding these waters while also illustrating their value through the eyes of those who depend on them for work and play. The film does all of this against a backdrop of stunning visuals along Grand Lake and the Illinois River.

GRDA contracted with 1577 Productions to produce the documentary, which features an intro from GRDA President/CEO Dan Sullivan, as well as interviews with GRDA Vice President of Ecosystems and Watershed Management Dr. Darrell Townsend, GRDA Vice President of Scenic Rivers Operations Ed Fite and others.

The first public premier of Our Borrowed Water was originally scheduled for February 19, but had to be cancelled due to weather. The film will now be shown on Monday, March 25th at 6:30 PM inside the Grand Hall at the GRDA Ecosystems and Education Center in Langley. The event is free and open to the public. Following the premiere, there will also be time for a short Q&A session about the film. Additional premier events are being planned at other locations in the GRDA lakes and river areas.

With roughly 70,000 surface acres of lakes under its control, as well as the waters of the scenic Illinois River, GRDA is second only to the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB) in terms of jurisdiction over state waters. GRDA’s ongoing efforts to protect and preserve these waters is evident in many ways, including the work conducted in its water research laboratories, its public outreach programs and ongoing partnerships with other resource agencies across a four-state region.
Online Payment Available

Did You Know?

Beginning boaters and experienced experts alike need to be familiar with the boating safety rules of operation. It's always important to be educated and prepared for every circumstance that might arise, because only 14 percent of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had received boating safety instruction. You can learn boating safety rules by taking a local Boater Safety Course or  online course  to help educate yourself.

Boating Tips From the GLPS

Anchor rode is typically a combination of a chain and rope or just chain. Some small boat skippers may only use rope connected to the anchor not realizing the rode does more than simply tie the anchor to the boat.

A proper rode forms an arc between the anchor and the boat, and is nearly vertical at the boat and horizontal at the anchor. The weight of the rode using chain at the anchor shaft produces the arc which is necessary to have the rode pull horizontal to the bottom and not straight up. This helps so that small gusts of wind and boat wakes will not dislodge the anchor as a taut line would do with any sudden movement.
