Alumni group at the August social in Irvine, CA

MANY THANKS to all alumni who attended the social at the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships!  We hosted 44 National Team Alumni and family. Extra support came from Kristy Kowal and John Naber, who helped us spread the word and make it an even bigger gathering.

Gary Hall Sr. brought his entire family, including Gary Hall Jr., and Matt Biondi came with five members of his family. Everyone gathered in a circle to hear our guest speaker, 6-time Olympic medalist Rebecca Soni, but not before each alum shared their biggest personal moment in swimming.

While we all enjoyed hearing these insider stories, my favorite was Steve Furniss saying his "biggest moment" was when he beat his brother, followed by Bruce Furniss (who was standing next to him) saying his was when he beat Steve. That got a big howl of laughter! The social was a great mix of young and old. Rebecca Soni, our recently retired and newest alum, brought Ariana Kukors, who announced that she is, in fact, making a comeback for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Good luck Ariana!

Tour Fantasy Camp - The Ultimate Swim Camp for Adults!

October 17-19, swimmers 18+ get the Olympian treatment and learn what it's like to live the U.S. National Team lifestyle on the Olympic Training Center campus. Fantasy Camp was launched last year with great success. Next month the fun continues with the support of USA Swimming Foundation Ambassadors and Olympic Gold Medalists Nathan Adrian and
Rowdy Gaines, along with special guest and three-time Olympic champion
Debbie Meyer. Serving as head coach will be Bruce Gemmell, coach to Olympians Andrew Gemmell and multiple world record-holders Katie Ledecky.

The $2,500 cost to attend includes a taxable donation of $1,500.
The training camp proved to be a tremendous value to participants in 2013 who received instruction from Olympians and Olympic coaches, and it was a fantastic fundraiser to support our mission of saving lives and building champions.

If you know of any swimmers 18 yrs + who would love to spend a long weekend living in the OTC dorms, eating at the training table and working with swimming stars, please have them contact Morgan Weinberg or call 719.866.3211.

A few spots are still available, but hurry - registration deadline is September 10th!

Mary Lou Skok, known as Mary Lou Petty during her Olympic

swimming career, recently passed away at the age of 98 in Arizona.

S
kok competed at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, taking 4th place in the 400 freestyle. She was also in line to compete in the 1932 Olympics, but the Great Depression hit her family particularly hard, keeping her from competing in the Games.

Mary Lou remained involved in athletics and fitness her whole life. She golfed and exercised weekly and was on her way to an exercise class, just days shy of her 99th birthday when she passed.
