October 2024

A Message From Our President

Hello friends,

It's been an incredibly busy month at GRR with all of the puppies coming in, the planning for our Lakeside Splash event and preparing for our annual business meeting on October 26th. We're never too busy, however, to help Goldens in need, including little Harlei, who came to us as as an owner rehoming the afternoon of September 30th.

Harlei is the 102nd dog of the year putting us on track for 132 dogs this year, which means that our intake has slowed down just slightly over where we were last month. Applications were on the rise with 76 last month! Our volunteers are working overtime to process everyone as quickly as possible.

Thank heavens mornings and evenings are a little cooler as we move further into fall, and with the holidays fast approaching. Check out the pumpkin dog treat recipes and Halloween safety tips in the You Really Need to Know This! section at the end of the newsletter.

I hope to see many of you at Lakeside Splash and the business meeting and I hope that you all have a safe and happy Halloween.

Warm Regards,

Michelle

We Still Need Foster and Respite Families!

Fall is here and it's a great time to become a foster or respite family. With the holidays right around the corner, we especially need respite families who will open their home for a short period of time to a Golden who is in foster care. We continue to bring in many young dogs monthly and we can really use your help. It's so rewarding to help a Golden in need get ready for their forever family. Can we count on you?

You may submit your application online and we will do our best to expedite your application as our need is immediate. if you still have questions, please email our adoption team for more information.

We can't thank you enough for opening your home and heart

to help a Golden along the way to their forever home!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

GRR is a recipient of a year-long grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization that provides dental care for senior dogs. This quarter, Ozzy is the sweet boy that received dental care as a result of the grant. GRR is grateful for the grant funds from The Grey Muzzle Organization that provide senior dogs with essential dental care to ensure they have a healthy mouth and a happy life.

Ozzy is a dapper 7-year-old gentleman who was found roaming as a stray in San Antonio. When he came to GRR, he was matted with mud and had leaves embedded in his fur. Once he was transported to Austin, Ozzy received a full medical assessment where it was found that he had a skin condition, anemia, needed to be neutered, and needed dental treatment. As of today, Ozzy’s skin condition and anemia have been resolved, and he received dental treatment after he was neutered.

Ozzy has adjusted well to the “spoiled life”- he adores receiving attention, loves having a routine, and is always willing to join you on the couch for some cuddles. He is affectionate, loves praise from his humans and is the ultimate companion. He has the quintessential gentle Golden personality that is so lovable. He’s also reportedly a great assistant in trying to catch flies outside. When he snaps at them, his upper lip sometimes gets stuck, showing off his happy smile, all thanks to dental treatment that was made possible by The Grey Muzzle Organization.

Ozzy is a gentle, obedient lovebug. He was recently adopted by his forever family and we’re excited to hear about his future journey. Only the best for this sweet boy.

It's All About the Dogs! Here's Our Roundup!

Look Who's Here! Welcome to GRR!

Peyton 24-094 is a handsome1-year-old Golden who is energetic and social. Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, he’s been bounced around a bit and we know for certain that his current home was at least his third home. The rehoming family got him from a friend who was recently diagnosed with serious medical problems and their resident dog didn't appreciate his puppy antics. They received a recommendation about GRR so they contacted us as they knew we’d find him the best forever family.

We believe that 2024 must be a record year for GRR for puppies!

September started off no differently than the last three months, with two four-month-old puppies arriving in our care through a rescue-to-rescue transfer from Spay it Forward. Drum roll as we introduce our newest little family of Goldens to GRR.

Please welcome the NFL Litter.

Kelce 24-095 is the 8-year-old mama Golden of 4-month-old son Elway 24-096 and 4-month-old daughter Brees 24-097. The family came to us from Laredo and we were informed by our rescue friend, Sid, that the owner could not afford to feed them and they are malnourished. Both of the puppies need to gain at least ten pounds, but are otherwise healthy. Mama Kelce is heartworm positive and also needs to gain some weight. We're so glad that the family has joined GRR and we will find them all awesome forever homes.

Kelce 24-095 is matched to her family.

Elway 24-096 is with his foster family.

Brees 24-097 was adopted.

Sirius 24-098 is a handsome 3-year-old. We were contacted by the Del Rio Animal Shelter to see if we could help a Golden that was picked up as a stray on August 29th. Sadly, no owner had surfaced and they were hoping to get him into rescue as he was at risk of being euthanized.

Since we accepted him on the 9/11 anniversary, we decided to name him after a 9/11 hero. Sirius is officially the only police dog known to have been killed during the September 11th terrorist attack. Sirius worked as an Explosive Detector dog at the World Trade Center and was on duty the morning the Towers were attacked. Sadly, he did not survive and his remains were recovered in the winter of 2002 in the wreckage of the South Tower. He he was ceremoniously removed from Ground Zero with a full honor guard, in a manner befitting a hard-working member of the Port Authority Police Department.

Sirius is a scared little boy and his foster family is taking it slow and allowing him lots of time to decompress and realize he is is finally safe. Welcome to GRR, where someone will always come looking for you!

More Puppies! We were alerted to six puppies from a contact of the owner. The owner had posted them on Facebook and multiple people mentioned GRR so she reached out. Several of the puppies had been “spoken for” through the Facebook post and we were told not to take any more than the two that we took.

Bretagne 24-099

Centurion 24-100

Please welcome Bretagne 24-099 who is named after the 9/11 heroine Golden who worked so hard to locate survivors and Centurion 24-100, our 100th intake in 2024. Both puppies are approximately 5 months old and were in a veterinary hospital at intake because Centurion was diagnosed with Parvo and we chose to have Bretagne monitored closely in the event that she also became ill. Centurion was successfully treated for Parvo and is now with his foster family. Bretagne remained healthy and is now with her own foster family. We're so happy that we were able to rescue these two neglected pups and ensure that they will have a wonderful life with their forever families.

Meet Serenity 24-101, the newest beauty to join the GRR family. She was found by a Good Samaritan who searched extensively for an owner over several weeks and no one surfaced. GRR was the perfect option to find this girl her forever family! She is about 3 years old and a true Golden gem. We are so excited to learn more about her. Serenity is matched to her new family.

Harlei 24-102 is a 5.5-month-old snuggly cuddlebug who became a GRR girl the afternoon of September 30th. She was rehomed to us due to her former owner’s living situation of being in an apartment and feeling like Harlei really needs a yard to run and play in. Some health issues also created challenges caring for a young puppy so she knew GRR would find the best place for this little girl. We are excited to learn more about her while she is in foster care for the next few weeks.

My Dream Really Did Come True! I Got Adopted!

We're so happy to announce the adoption of Mozart 24-035 on September 7th by Annamarie and Jeremy.

Mozart came to GRR the end of April and was heartworm positive. After finally finishing his treatments, he experienced a total loss of platelets the end of August, which is thought to be the result of an autoimmune condition. With medication and lots of love he has bounced back and his platelet level is actually HIGH now. He will most likely need to remain on medication, but the change in him is remarkable. It is so obvious that this boy is so well loved! In addition to Annamarie and Jeremy, they have a roomie, Bethany, who loves him as well! Congrats to Mozart and family!

Castle and Kobe

It is with great joy that we announce the adoption of our Kobe 24-045 to Cindy and Joe on September 8th.

Kobe has been in our care since May with an unfortunate interval in July that, thankfully, he came back to us and found his truly forever family with Joe and Cindy. They are no strangers to the Gold Ribbon world, having adopted Castle in 2014 and Honor in 2017. After Honor (Charlie Mae) passed away earlier this year, the house was too empty and it was time to open up their hearts to another Golden. The third time is the charm with Kobe, who is still a bit mischievous but full of love and Golden goofiness, which Cindy and Joe are more than ready for. We're so so happy for sweet Kobe and his new family.

Benito 24-090 was adopted on September 11th by Brandi and her son, Ogden. Their newest family member is a friend to all, loves playing fetch, gives the best snuggles and even retrieves his brush whenever he wants to be groomed

Special thanks to Ogden, who wrote his mom a persuasive essay on adopting a Golden and conducted independent research to find GRR. It was, says Brandi, "meant to Be-nito"! They are keeping the name, which means "blessing." Congratulations to the new family!

Please join us in celebrating the adoption of Van Gogh 24-064 on September 14th by Laura and Robert. Now known as Dooley, this sweet, gorgeous cuddlebug, came to GRR in June with the Artist Litter. He was much smaller than his litter mates and had a LOT of worms!

This sweet boy is a well-mannered, smart, funny, handsome little gentleman who has put on weight and is finally feeling good and getting up to puppy antics!

He loves his new family and furry siblings, Sawyer, Pongo and especially Poppet! Congratulations to the new family. ! We can't wait to hear all about Dooley's adventures!

Genesis 24-081 was adopted on September 17th by Daniel, Amelia and their daughter. She is #2 of the Classic Rock Litter to be adopted, after big brother Boston. Her new family took no time deciding on this sweet girl who is super chill and is quickly learning the rules. She is a tough one, having recovered from Parvo and now showing her true personality.  She really loves water, and people and carrots and bugs and…  She will have lots of attention from her new family and will be well loved. Congratulations to them all!

Congratulations are in order to Juli and Keith on adopting River 24-091 on September 22nd. They feel that the name "River" is a perfect match for him and it will remain his name as he embarks on this exciting new chapter.

River’s journey has been a little rocky, but he’s finally found his forever home. About three months ago, River was found abandoned on the San Antonio River Walk. He was tied up with a makeshift rope, no collar, no chip and all alone. A kind-hearted tourist visiting from out of state noticed him sitting by himself for a while and couldn’t leave him behind. Although she couldn’t keep him, she made sure River got to a safe place.

We’re so happy to share that River’s story has a happy ending, thanks to Juli and Keith! Here’s to River’s new life that will be filled with love, adventure and, of course, lots of walks.

Percy 24-093 was adopted on September 23drd by Heather, former GRR adopter of Zeus in 2017, and her two sons, Zach (left of Heather) and Zane (right of Heather).

You will notice the theme of “Z” in the family names and they decided as a family to keep with tradition, so Percy is now known as Zilker!! This is also in honor of the celebrated and favorite Austin hotspot, Zilker Park.

Zilker is all things growing and curious as golden puppies should be! He eats well, plays hard and sleeps a lot still as he is only 3.5 months old!

He enjoys mealtimes and has a blast hunting for food in his snuffle mats for some fun mental enrichment. He loves taking long naps at his Mom’s feet while she works during the day from home and cuddling up to his new teenage human brother, who has discovered selfies with an adorable Golden puppy makes for lots of attention from teenage girls!

He has recently discovered squirrels and loves to chase them up the trees and watch them as they go branch to branch, dropping some really exciting acorns for him to hunt, which keeps his Mom busy trying to keep them away from him. Another fun puppy game is keep away!

Whatever Zilker is up to in his new home, you know he is so well loved and living his most exciting and best life!

Congratulations Zilker on being matched to the most perfect family who will love and adore you, sweet boy!

Ollie 24-047 was adopted on September 26th by Karen and Ron. They love this easygoing cuddle monster for all that he is and are thrilled to become his forever family. Adoration and thoughtfully curated adventures await Mr. Ollie, including long morning walks and RV travel (did we mention this boy loves car rides?). The Lugos are superbly equipped to take care of Ollie and are utterly devoted to giving him a beautiful life. The best is yet to come!

Brees 24-097 was adopted on September 28th and we're so excited to hear all about her adventures with her forever family. This little one deserves nothing but the best life and we're so happy for her and her new family.

It is with great joy that we announce the adoption of Ozzy 24-089 to Cathryn and Steve on Sunday, Sept. 29th! Cathryn was so sure Ozzy was the one for their family, including Layla the Cocker Spaniel, that a “Welcome Home Ozzy” gift basket was waiting for him. Layla grew up with an Irish Wolfhound that and a Golden, both of whom have passed. It was abundantly clear that she was so happy to have another four-legged sibling to romp with again when Ozzy arrived for the meet!

Ozzy came to GRR as a stray in bad state that a Good Samaritan took care of until we could bring him under our care. Look at this handsome boy today!

Congratulations to the new family!

Halloween Safety Tips for Dog Owners

American Kennel Club

Halloween is right around the corner, and, as any experienced veterinarian can tell you, there are all manners of Halloween hazards for dogs.

Each year, veterinary clinics care for dogs that get into trouble on and around Halloween. However, there are many easy ways for dog owners to take precautions ahead of the holiday.

Keep Candy and Dangerous Treats Away

Many of the food and treats we enjoy on Halloween are toxic to dogs, and some can be deadly. Unlike cats, who tend to be picky eaters, many dogs will eat anything – including the wrapper in which the treat is stored.

If you’d like to give your dog a special treat this Halloween, consider making your own pumpkin dog treats. You can also buy your pet treats for dogs that contain pumpkin.

The treats below are especially dangerous to your pets, so be sure to keep them out of reach:

Chocolate

Chocolate consumption in dogs is a top ingestion problem at Halloween. All types of chocolate contain theobromine, which can be harmful and sometimes fatal to your dog. Baking chocolate is exceptionally high in this chemical. The general rule of thumb is the darker the chocolate, the more danger it poses. If your pet consumes chocolate, contact your veterinarian, a veterinary emergency center, or the Pet Poison Helpline immediately. Quick treatment can minimize the danger to your dog.

Candies and Gum

The biggest concern with candy is the risk of the ingredient xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol commonly used as an artificial sweetener. Xylitol is toxic to pets and is often found in sugar-free items. However, it’s been showing up in more and more foods, even those that aren’t labeled as sugar-free. Most often, xylitol is found in sugar-free gum, sugar-free candy, and sugar-free baked goods. It’s sometimes found in toothpaste and peanut butter, as well.
