Dr. Mitchell Cairo Secures $2.6M FDA Grant for Infant CMV Infection Research |
Mitchell Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, cell biology and anatomy, medicine, and of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, has received a $2.6 million grant from the Food and Drug Administration to explore a novel and innovative treatment for babies born with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection – the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United States. “Moderate to severe congenital CMV infection in infants results in significant developmental changes and hearing loss,” says Dr. Cairo. “The current treatment for CMV is the oral antibiotic (anti-viral) drug valganciclovir. Unfortunately, this drug alone is incapable of both eliminating CMV infection and preventing severe neurodevelopmental disabilities.” This grant will allow Dr. Cairo and his research team to investigate the safety and effectiveness of combining valganciclovir with CMV memory T-cells from maternal donors to improve outcomes for infants with moderate to severe congenital CMV infection.

The Physiology Research Symposium spotlighted the diverse range of important research underway by students, fellows, and research associates of the Department of Physiology. The presentations ranged from the non-invasive mapping of cortical microvasculature dilation to the impairment of placental development caused by maternal undernourishment. “A critical component of scientific inquiry is the opportunity to engage with an informed community who will scrutinize our methods, reasoning, and evidence,” said Christopher Leonard, Ph.D., center, interim chair and professor of the Department of Physiology. “Our annual research symposium provides this opportunity for our talented students and fellows who presented their ongoing research, in various stages of development, to the entire physiologycommunity. This was a great opportunity for everyone to catch up with our neighbor’s work and to provide feedback to help advance their science."

Meet Tanishka Wiggins, First GSBMS Wellness Ambassador for Student Mental Health and Well-Being |
Tanishka Wiggins, M.S. Class of 2025, has been appointed as a wellness ambassador for the GSBMS. Wiggins graduated from the University at Albany with a degree in biology and is pursuing her dream of becoming a physician. Although currently interested in anesthesiology, she plans to keep all options open once accepted into the School of Medicine.
Wiggins decided to join the Wellness Ambassador Program because it provides her with an excellent opportunity to connect with her peers while also promoting awareness about the significance of taking care of one's mental health. As a welness ambassador, she hopes to encourage students to be open about their emotions and not be afraid to talk to someone who understands the stress that comes with a rigorous academic program.
Wiggins would like GSBMS students to know, "I can be found around campus most of the time, whether it's in the library or the cafeteria. Please do not hesistate to contact me if you need someone to talk to, as I am always happy to lend a listening ear!
