HARRIS NAMED OCT. GSCS MOST VALUABLE PARENT
The Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) named Wendy Harris from Rehoboth Road Middle School (RRMS) as the October district-level Most Valuable Parent (MVP). Mrs. Harris volunteers her time to help in the Media Center every Monday, assists with many grade-level activities and takes photos for the school's yearbook. She also takes pictures at RRMS's annual Jack-O-Lantern Jog and for their cross-country team.

NORCOM'S PARTNERSHIP RECOGNIZED BY GEORGIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION
Norcom Inc. was presented with a Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) Partnership Commendation for their work with the Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) on both the Education Celebration and the Kids in Need store.

Each year GSBA recognizes organizations and businesses that support local public schools and school systems with the GSBA Partnership Commendation.

During the November 7 Griffin-Spalding Board of Education meeting, GSCS Superintendent Jim Smith presented the GSBA Partnership Commendation certificate to Norcom's Vice President of Finance and Human Resources Evan Stitt who also serves on the Griffin-Spalding Partners In Education (PIE) board.

AMP-IT-UP TEACHERS PARTICIPATE IN GULF OF MEXICO RESEARCH EXPEDITION

In late September, two GSCS teachers participated in the Georgia Tech AMP-IT-UP program were given an opportunity to join a research expedition in the Gulf of Mexico. Cheryl Wilder from Kennedy Road Middle School and Kathy Duke from Rehoboth Road Middle School are seventh-grade life science teachers that received the chance to experience real-world research with ECOGIG (Ecosystem Impacts of Oil and Gas Inputs in the Gulf,) an organization founded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. The research was relevant not only for the teachers but also for their students, who have been studying AMP-IT-UP curriculum modules on the Gulf ecosystems.

PIE TUITION REIMBURSEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS OPEN!
Griffin Spalding Partners In Education (PIE) is offering scholarships for up to $1,000 each to Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) teachers who are currently seeking additional certification or advanced degrees related to their teaching/educational field.


To qualify, applicants should:
* Have at least one year of service as a certified GSCS employee.
* Complete the online application between November 3-20, 2017.

Recipients must:
* Provide grades and a tuition receipt (or loan statement) for reimbursement up to $1,000 (Must scan and attach with application). 
* Agree, upon completion of certification or degree, to serve as a teacher or administrator in the Griffin­ Spalding County School System for at least one year if offered a position.
* Remain in good academic standing while receiving scholarship funding by maintaining passing grades and a 3.0 GPA or higher.

*The tuition reimbursement scholarships may be used for tuition, books, or lab fees.

GSCS CENTRAL OFFICE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Keiza Hunt, nutrition and wellness technician
Keiza is responsible for menu planning, nutritional analysis and compliance with meal pattern for all GSCS schools. In addition, she assists with application processing, ordering and training. Keiza is a certified ServSafe instructor and provides this required training in our system. 100 percent of her students have passed this strenuous test. Even with all of these tasks, Keiza finds time to use her culinary degree to cater delicious meals for Central Office events and other occasions. She is a great asset to GSCS!
