This week, the Griffin Region College and Career Academy (GRCCA) was proud to host Lt. Governor Casey Cagle's Annual Business & Education Summit. I had the honor of participating on a panel discussion titled "Leading with Regional Impact" with my fellow superintendents from Butts and Pike County Schools, the president of Southern Crescent Technical College and representatives from the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The discussion focused on how the idea for the GRCCA was conceived with the goal of training and retaining talent to contribute to the overall success in our three communities. It was a great opportunity to showcase our GRCCA and I am thankful to Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle for allowing us to host this event.

I also want to congratulate Principal Dr. Tiffany Taylor and her team at Carver Road Middle School (CAMS) for being named a Georgia Association of Middle School Principals (GAMSP) 2017 "Breakout School" at the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals (GASSP) Fall meeting this week. Carver Road Middle has earned many points of pride over the last few years and should be recognized for their efforts in improving student achievement.

As we approach Thanksgiving, we have a lot to be thankful for as educators. We get to work and build relationships with students and families every day. Being Agents of Change, we have the opportunity to encourage and empower students to build meaningful futures for themselves and our community. I very am thankful to be in this position and am proud of the many great things happening here in Griffin-Spalding.

I wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving break next week and be safe.

Sincerely,
James D. Smith
Superintendent

PARENT ENGAGEMENT: HOW DO WE BUILD TIES BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL?
Students learn best when the adults in their lives, parents, teachers and other family and community members, work together to encourage and support them. Schools alone cannot address all of a student's needs. The need for a strong partnership between schools and families is vital.

When parents are engaged, students are more likely to:
* Achieve more
* Attend school regularly
* Complete homework more consistently
* Earn higher grades and test scores
* Graduate college and career ready

After watching the videos, please share your input on how we can build ties between home and school that will led to student achievement.
