DESTINATION GRADUATION 2018
Destination Graduation represents the culmination of all the hard work and dedication of students, parents and teachers as seniors walk across the stage to receive their high school diploma and other accolades.
 
A.Z. Kelsey Academy students will graduate Friday May 25, 9:30 a.m. in the Griffin Auditorium and Griffin High School students will graduate later that evening at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Spalding High School students will graduate on Saturday, May 26, 9 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Spalding High will host their baccalaureate program at First Baptist on May 21, 6:30 pm. Baccalaureate programs for GHS and AZK is May 23, 7 p.m. at the First Assembly of God.

The last day of school for all GSCS students is May 25.

GSCS SUPERINTENDENT SMITH AWARDED GSSA PRESIDENT'S AWARD
The Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) recognized Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) Superintendent James D. Smith as a recipient of the 2018 Georgia School Superintendent Association (GSSA) President's Award. Superintendent Smith was presented with the award on April 19 during the GSSA Spring Bootstrap Conference in Savannah.

Each award winner is nominated by their RESA Director for their outstanding leadership in their school systems and communities.

In just three years as superintendent at GSCS, Smith has made a positive impact on
students, staff and the community through his leadership, commitment to student
achievement and implementation of many innovative and progressive programs.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2018 GSCS EDUCATOR HALL OF FAME 
Nominations are open for the 2018 Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) Educator Hall of Fame. Established in 2013, as a part of the school system's 60th Anniversary festivities, GSCS is seeking exemplary nominees for the Class of 2018.

Educators should be nominated for his/her outstanding and significant contributions to students, staff, parents and the community during their employment at GSCS. Nominees must have been employed at GSCS for a minimum of 10 years and be retired for at least five years. The district utilizes an independent panel of out-of-town judges to review all nominees.

Nomination forms are due May 15, 2018 and are available on the district website at www.spalding.k12.ga.us. The 2018 class will be inducted during a special ceremony on August 24, 2018 at the annual Griffin High School vs. Spalding High School football game. Read more...

The Griffin-Spalding County School Nutrition Department will be participating in the federally funded Seamless Summer Option (SSO) of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Under the program, nutritious meals are provided to all children 18 years old and under free of charge at the following community sites:

SHS STUDENT SUCCESS IN THE ARTS AND SPORTS

FIRST GSCS STUDENTS TO EARN FINE ARTS DIPLOMA SEAL

Seven Spalding High School students completed the process and are the first to earn the Fine Arts Diploma Seal for the Griffin-Spalding County School System. Last Fall, GSCS was approved to offer the Georgia Department of Education Fine Arts Diploma Seal. Interested students must meet certain requirements in regards to the number of fine arts classes they take, participate in a specific amount of extra-curricular fine arts activities, acquire 20 community service hours related to fine arts and present a capstone project. Congratulations!
SHS LADY JAGS BASKETBALL TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to the Spalding High School Lady Jags Basketball Team for winning the 2017 - 2018 Class AAAA GHSA State Championship!

Players: Kiana Banks, Kirah Milner, Keyondra Leverette, Kayla Milner, Aniaya Jester, Dana Dozier, Corriana Evans, Jordan Davis, Kierstyn Milner, Elicia Threatt, De'Erica Dewberry, Nia Duranham and Maya Collier. Managers: Skylar Hill, Nick Jester and Bri'Andi Willis. Assistant Coaches: Kevin Davis and Robby Milner. Head Coach: Tykira Gilbert.
2018 SPECIAL OLYMPICS
The 2018 Griffin-Spalding Special Olympics was held on May 4 at Griffin High School. Almost 200 GSCS students participated from 16 schools. Thank you to Special Education Department for coordinating the event, Griffin High School for hosting and to all student and staff volunteers who helped make this such a special day!







BAKER NAMED GSCS 2018 MEDIA SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR

Cowan Road Elementary Media Specialist Allison Baker is Griffin-Spalding County School System's (GSCS) Library Media Specialist of the Year (LMSOTY).


The LMSOTY is awarded for individual excellence in the library media field through service to students, teachers and community at the K-12 level. First nominated by her Principal Hoby Davenport and then having her application receive the highest score by the judging committee, Baker was identified as the schools system's candidate for the state competition.

Cowan Road Elementary Principal Hoby Davenport stated, "Ms. Baker serves on various teams and coordinates various academic groups. She works to fulfill the GSCS vision by providing students with learning activities, resources and technology which enables them to effectively acquire information, develop a pattern of lifelong learning and foster a love of reading. She collaborates with teachers to incorporate read-alouds, books displays, writing lessons and activities into the grade-level standards. Ms. Baker shows the compassion and dedication that we strive for here at Cowan Road Elementary and GSCS as an impeccable media specialist."

GHS STUDENTS EXCEL AT STATE COMPETITIONS
GHS STUDENT MARTIN SANCHEZ PLACES FIRST AT STATE COMPETITION

GHS Student Martin Sanchez received a First Place Gold Medal in Tile Setting at the Georgia State SKILLS USA Competition.

GHS STUDENT CHRISTIAN CASTRO SHINES AT REGIONAL AND STATE SCIENCE FAIR

Castro received first place at the Griffin Regional Science Fair and received the United States Air Force Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Science/Engineering Fair Project.

At the State Science Fair in Athens, Castro was awarded the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Award, Office of Naval Research Naval Science Award  and the UGA Lamar Dodd School of Art Excellence in Creative Problem Solving and Innovative Thinking Award.

On April 10, Marukan Vinegar presented a $10,000 check to benefit the Griffin-Spalding Partners In Education!

FNB SPONSORED 35TH ANNUAL OUTSTANDING STUDENT BANQUET

First National Bank sponsored the 34th Annual Outstanding Student and Scholarship Banquet on March 21. One hundred and seventeen Griffin and Spalding High School Seniors and 154 Griffin and Spalding High Juniors were recognized for having an 89.5 and above average.
