Spring Cleaning on the Mind?
Cleaning off those bookshelves and clearing out closets? Did you find new or gently used children's books you no longer need? If so, donate them! GSSCC's Young Professionals Network is asking all members to support its book drive now through the end of April to benefit CCI Health & Wellness Services.  CCI provides free books for all children to take home, each time they come to see the doctor. Help stock CCI's reading corner with books by collecting new or gently used books at your businesses all month long, or dropping them off at 8630 Fenton Street, Suite 1204.  Contact Jessica Wilson for more information.
Colesville Road Resurfacing Project Coming

This month, Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin resurfacing nearly one mile of US 29 (Colesville Road) between MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and St. Andrews Way (near Sligo Creek Parkway). It is anticipated that work will begin close the the Beltway area and proceed south. The $1.9 million project should be complete by year-end 2019. In addition to patching, milling, paving, and re-striping US 29, crews will also install concrete bus pads at bus stops within the project limits and clean and repair the existing storm drain system. MDOT SHA will also upgrade the curb and gutter and sidewalk ramps to meet Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Postcards were mailed last week to affected residents and businesses.
* GSSCC extends our deepest sympathies to the family of Andrew Lee, founder of Driven to Cure, who passed away Sunday evening surrounded by family and friends.  On May 15, 2015, Andrew was diagnosed with stage 4 rare kidney cancer known as HLRCC. He was told he had 6 months to a year to live. Facing a rare cancer with no known cure and having a desire to raise awareness about rare kidney cancers like HLRCC, Andrew built Driven To Cure, linked here, along with the help of his brother Tommy Lee, his family, and many of his friends. The organization has raised some $450,000 all donated toward research to find a cure for this disease.  While working on Driven to Cure, Andrew also volunteered for more than 7 different clinical trials. Read more on the Driven to Cure Facebook page.

* The Doubletree by Hilton Washington, D.C. - Silver Spring will bring its famous cookies to host one of the cookie stands for The Tree House Children's Advocacy Center's "Tour de Cookie" bike-ride fundraising event on Saturday, May 4. Riders can choose from four different routes, including a scenic "new extended short route," with distances ranging from 12 miles to 43 miles, and cookie stands along the way. GSSCC members are like family. We promote and celebrate each other's success. We share problems and provide solutions. We always offer support, even if we do not always agree. And we are committed to the well-being of our extended family members: Greater Silver Spring's non-profit organizations, residents, visitors and customers, for whom we are grateful.

At its annual Awards & Installation Dinner, GSSCC will recognize some of the member organizations the personify the idea that Chamber members are committed to supporting each other and the community.  We will inaugurate our "Circle of Stars," for-profit companies that personify excellence in corporate social responsibility through their efforts to make Silver Spring a better place to live, work, and run a business, specifically through service to the community during the past year in support of non-profit/community organizations or causes.  We will also recognize the Young Professional who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and outstanding contribution to the chamber during the past year.

GSSCC is seeking nominations for both these award groups.   Click  here  to nominate a member to be inducted into the GSSCC  "Circle of Stars."   Click here  to nominate a Young Professional  for the "Trail Blazer" award.
