Former Walter Reed Army Hospital to be Mixed-Use Community

GSSCC's Economic Development Committee had a preview last week of the redevelopment plans for the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center property in the District of Columbia, just outside the Silver Spring border. The development team took ownership of the property in November and  has scheduled an official ground-breaking for today. "The Parks at Walter Reed" redevelopment plan calls for the preservation of several historic buildings, the addition of mixed-use and mixed-income residential housing, more than 14 acres of green space, support services for seniors and veterans, and will accommodate office, retail, medical and educational uses. A portion of the site will become home to a U.S. Department of State Foreign Mission Center for various chanceries and embassies. And, another parcel has been purchased by Children's National Health System for the creation of a research center. The mixed use development will include 1,409 apartment units, 546 condos, 96 town homes, and 432 affordable residential units. It is expected to have some 185 thousand square feet of office space, plus 122 thousand square feet of space for non-profit use, as well as 236 thousand square feet of retail for a grocery store and other businesses.  The newest part of the old hospital will be torn down to make way for housing, but the historic building will be made available for a company to develop into a hotel/conference center. Construction is already underway on an international immersion focused charter school on the property. To view the presentation, click here.
