County Releases Minimum Wage Study, Reflects Business Concerns

According to the minimum wage study released last week, Montgomery County would lose some 47,000 jobs and nearly $41 million in tax revenue over the next five years if it raises the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2022. The study confirmed what GSSCC and other business groups have told County Councilmembers, "Most businesses support increasing the minimum wage; most already pay their employees more than the current minimum wage; but increasing the wage to $15 per hour by 2020, or even 2022, is just way too much, way to fast."

The study also noted that the wage increase will lead to significant loss of low-wage jobs, affecting most heavily those residents who are unskilled and have little experience -- those who most need jobs. It also challenged the argument that increasing the minimum wage will reduce the County's expenditures for social services, pointing out that some individuals who make $15 per hour may still qualify safety net programs, and others will enter those ranks as they lose their jobs.
