Safety Tips: Be aware of your surroundings, walk with a buddy

Montgomery County Police have reported an increasing number of robberies (particularly of mobile/smart phones) that are being committed by groups of individuals, some using a version of the "knock out game," to attack their victims.  County police urge everyone to be vigilant of their surroundings, not be distracted by cell phones and other mobile devices, and walk with a companion whenever possible.
Transportation Update: Metro Safe Surge Coming to Red Line

GSSCC reminds members that the "Safety Surges" on the Red Line begin August 1. Trains will single track continuously between the Takoma and Silver Spring stations from August 1 through August 7. From August 9 to August 18, trains will single track continuously between Shady Grove and Twinbrook. For more information about the Safe Track schedule, click here. To sign up and have Metro Alerts delivered to your desktop or mobile device, click here. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation will provide additional bus service along the Red Line during these times. Last week, Governor Larry Hogan agreed to provide an additional $1 million for shuttle bus service that will transport riders between Metro stations.
Legislative Update - Your Chamber Working for Your Business

DLC Task Force
Montgomery County held its first meeting of the Task Force to study options for privatizing the County's Department of Liquor Control. This group was formed at the urging of the local Chambers of Commerce and the Restaurant Association of Maryland. The local Chambers are represented by two business owners - one restaurant owner and one beer and wine store owner - to assure that the challenges and concerns experienced are addressed. GSSCC President Jane Redicker, and other Chamber representatives are attending the meetings, and looking into alternative organizational structures to manage the distribution of alcohol in the county.

Minimum Wage Bill
GSSCC continues to meet with County Councilmembers in an effort to highlight members' concerns about legislation that would increase the County's minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2020. The primary concern is that $15 by 2020 is too much, too soon, will have a negative impact on many of our small business members, and will ultimately harm those it is designed to help by eliminating jobs for low-skilled, low-wage earners, and youth seeking their first paid jobs. It's worth noting that Prince George's County has decided not to consider another minimum wage increase at this time, and the Baltimore City Council's Labor Committee voted last week to exempt any business with 50 or fewer employees or gross annual income under $500,000 from its minimum wage bill. The Montgomery County bill will to go the full Council sometime after the August recess. Members are encouraged to communicate their concerns by emailing
