GSSCC Keeps Members Informed on WSSC & Pepco Construction

GSSCC President Jane Redicker participated in a series of meetings last week to gather accurate information that can help members plan for the disruptions that will accompany both utilities' scheduled upgrades in the coming months, and to encourage both utilities to take steps to minimize disruptions.

On Monday, Redicker met with Pepco representatives to press for consideration of business concerns about potential power interruptions (Pepco promises that this project will not result in outages.), restrictions on parking, and traffic disruptions. Over the next five years, starting this September, Pepco will be upgrading its underground infrastructure between the Sligo and Takoma substation. Construction will require lane closures, detours, and other restrictions on Colesville Road, Spring Street, and Fenton Street in the downtown area. Redicker urged Pepco to provide sufficient advance notice of any disruptions, keep sidewalks open, and to make sure its work crews do not take up valuable parking in the downtown area. She also urged coordination with WSSC, which will also be working in the downtown during a similar time frame.

On Wednesday, GSSCC hosted a meeting for members with WSSC officials involved in that utility's planned replacement of water mains under Colesville Road from Georgia Avenue to the Beltway. Details were provided about the schedule of work (which began last week as crews started surveying and staking the area), guidelines for lane closures, notification of traffic pattern changes, and repaving. Redicker urged WSSC officials to work with local businesses and accommodate their needs at times when water must be shut off for connecting to the new lines. The work will begin in earnest on August 21, when crews anticipate lane closures as they begin digging test pits to identify existing underground utilities.

WSSC provided a handout at the meeting, linked here.  In addition, the utility has created a website that will include updates and provides members a link to sign up for email updates.
GSSCC Weighs In to Oppose New $15 Minimum Wage Bill

GSSCC joined other members of the newly formed Montgomery County Business Coalition (MCMDBiz) to express opposition to Councilmember's efforts to bring back the $15 minimum wage bill before seeing the results of a study done this summer to assess the proposal's impact on employers.

On Tuesday, Councilmember Marc Elrich, supported by Councilmembers Tom Hucker, Hans Riemer, George Leventhal, and Nancy Navarro, introduced Bill 28-17, a similar bill to the one vetoed by the County Executive earlier this year. MCMDBiz said Councilmembers were "irresponsible to introduce legislation to further increase the local minimum wage on the eve of a six-week recess without understanding the impact on Montgomery County taxpayers."  A public hearing is expected sometime in September when Councilmembers come back from their long break.
