With only two weeks left in this session of the General Assembly, bills that are expected to be enacted are moving through both chambers. Here's an update on legislation GSSCC has been following and advocating for or against on your behalf.
- Legislation proposed by Governor Hogan to provide some tax relief for small businesses has passed the Senate and is scheduled for consideration by a House committee on March 28.  SB134  would provide tax credits for small businesses (having fewer than 25 employees) that have employees who earn equal to or less than $30,000 per year.
- Legislation (HB512) that would prohibit employers from seeking information about an applicant's salary history has passed the House and will be heard in the Senate on March 29. Sections of the bill that would have required all employers to publish pay scales was stripped from the bill.
- The state "Ban the Box" bill HB541 died in committee. In a touch of irony, the original bill proscribed jail time for any employer who violated the law by asking a candidate about his or her criminal background.
- Legislation that would make null and void provisions in any employment contract, policy, or agreement that waive an employee's rights or remedies to a claim of sexual harassment has passed the House. HB1596 will be heard in the Senate on March 29.
SB1025 that would authorize a study of the impact, collection, and administration of sales and use tax on deliveries by out-of-state vendors has passed the Senate and has moved to the House Rules Committee.
