Dockless Bike Share Could Be in Silver Spring Next Week
GSSCC's Economic Development Committee last week heard a presentation on a new "dockless bikeshare" program that is being launched in Silver Spring. The six-month pilot project, which will receive no County funding, is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding between Montgomery County Department of Transportation and three for-profit companies. The companies - Mobike, Ofo, and LimeBike - will be placing bikes in various areas around greater Silver Spring. County officials could not confirm the exact number of bikes that will come to Silver Spring.

Riders will access the bikes via an app that opens the lock under the seat.  Cost initially will be $2 per 30 minutes.   GPS will track the location of the bike, including where it is parked and re-locked. Committee members expressed concerns about where bikes will be left once the rider arrives at his or her destination. County officials said that bikes are to be parked only in public bike parking areas, designated areas, and public sidewalks where they do not impede pedestrian access, fire hydrants, street furniture, or bus stops. The operator is supposed to display a logo, company contact information, website, and phone number so that individuals may report problems like bikes being parked in front of business entrances or other inappropriate places.
