WSSC Rate Change Plans Could Affect Your Business

Businesses that must use a high volume of water face even higher costs under a proposed new rate structure being considered by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). Currently these businesses pay based on the volume used, but WSSC believes that changing its rate structure to charge high-volume users more per gallon would encourage conservation. However, for some industries usage is not a matter of waste, it is an integral part of their business. This is the first time in 25 years that WSSC has reviewed its rate structure and the ultimate decision will affect rates for years to come. Earlier this year, the Maryland Public Service Commission ruled that WSSC's initial proposal to create a 16-tier rate structure was unreasonable and would have charged excessive rates to high-volume business users in order to subsidize low-volume users. Subsequently, WSSC has narrowed its proposed new structure to five options. One would be a flat rate per gallon for all customers (not likely to be accepted at this point); the others would use three or four brackets of increasing block rates. The latter four would penalize some businesses that must use high volumes of water (for example, medical facilities and scientific/biomedical laboratories, among others). Members who are concerned about these proposals should contact Jane Redicker at GSSCC for more information.
Seminary Road Bridge Rehab Underway Now

Last week Maryland State Highway Administration crews began a $6.2 million effort to rehabilitate the Seminary Road Bridge over I-495. Crews will replace the steel beams of the deck, apply a protective fiber wrap to bridge pier columns, and resurface the Seminary Road approaches and inner and outer loops of The Beltway in the project area. Two lanes of traffic - one in each direction - will be maintained during the project, but crews are permitted to close a single lane between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sunday night through Friday morning between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Crews can also close multiple lanes on The Beltway during the overnight times. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.
