By: Val Thorpe, Director of Communications & Marketing

Back-to-school clothes were also prominently displayed for the summer growth spurts that inevitably happen. But maybe it's time to take a closer look at what children really need to prepare for the year of learning ahead.( continue reading)

Take Back the Tap: Blind Water-Taste-Test Results

We recently hosted a water tasting to help educate people on the many varieties of water available to the public. For this blind taste-test we selected six different types water: Poland Spring, ZEROWATER filtered water, Shoprite bottled spring water, PUR filtered tap water, unfiltered/untreated well water, and the public supply water containing bleach. Water Filters - Choose the Right One for You
by Reem Shair, William Paterson University Student/GSWA Intern
Water is amazing at dissolving things, which is both good and bad. It's great if you need to remove a stain from your clothes, but not always so great when you need to drink it. Water is constantly circulating throughout the environment dissolving bacteria and toxins as it makes its way into your faucet. Many people look to water filtration devices to help reduce the amounts of bacteria and toxins in their water. Realistically though, most tap water is entirely safe to drink and use. Filtration devices are generally used to help with the taste and smell of the water. If you don't know whether your water is safe to drink straight from the tap, getting your water tested is a great way to find out. Water testing will also identify what is in your water so you can determine what kind of filter you should buy. (continue reading)

A Tip for Watershed-Friendly Living

Properly dispose of prescription drugs. Local police departments have drop boxes available 24 hours a day.

When any substance, including medication, is flushed down the toilet, it becomes a part of the water supply. It can leech into groundwater if you have a septic system or be released from the wastewater treatment center if you are on a public sewer system. Unfortunately, the treatment process cannot remove drugs, so they become a part of both water and soil. Traces of prescription drugs have been found in plants, fish, and other animals that drink or swim in lakes, streams, and oceans.
