February Advisor Spotlight

Wes Kirkbride (He/Him/His)

Department: College of Computing, Undergraduate Advising

Title: Assistant Director of Academic Advising

Hometown: Fayetteville, NC

Alma Mater(s): University of West Georgia (BS & M.Ed.)

Degree(s): BS in Psychology (2007); M.Ed. in Guidance & Counseling (2014)

Q: What are some of your favorite activities and hobbies?

A: I love HIIT/strength training workouts, practicing yoga, biking the Atlanta BeltLine, traveling to new places, and spending time with my pup Skye. I also captain a kickball team on a local LGBTQ league (Stonewall Sports).

Q: What is the best part of your job?

A: Cross-collaboration with multiple departments on campus. I work with the Computational Media program, an undergrad degree shared with three colleges. This allows me to align with a diverse array of faculty/staff on curricular matters and creating solutions around advising/registration that best serve our CM student population.

Q: Where is your favorite place on campus?

A: The home office on my remote days? Kidding. I love exploring new/rehabilitated spaces on campus. I am especially a fan of the updated John Lewis Student Center area and how it has been modernized in an exceptional way.

Q: Unique/exciting thing you bring to Georgia Tech?

A: I have a background in psychology and counseling. This allows me to exemplify strong listening skills and empathy when addressing students’ questions/concerns. I have also been on campus for a while, so I bring a wealth of knowledge to the CM program as it relates to working with faculty and staff on various curricular matters.

Q: Anything else that you would like for the GTAAN Community to know about you and/or your role at Tech?

A: I am grateful for the skills and experience I have developed during my time at Georgia Tech. I truly cannot believe it will be ten years in May of this year. I am looking forward to what the future holds!

Thanks for letting us shine the spotlight on you this month, Wes!

New Tutoring Option for CoE Students

We are pleased to share a new tutoring option for engineering students this semester. TAS has partnered with Knack, an app-based tutoring platform, to deliver peer tutoring for engineering courses. Please help us promote this option to your students! Tutoring is free, online, and can be scheduled at the convenience of the student + tutor. Students can sign up to be a tutor for courses in which they have earned an A at Tech, and completely manage their work hours. This provides much more flexibility than a current tutor position with TAS, and we hope it allows us to offer more tutoring in engineering. If our spring pilot goes well, we will expand to the full campus course directory. Students can request a tutor or sign up to be a tutor at gatech.joinknack.com.
