March Advisor Spotlight

Anastasia Lagmay

Department: School of Modern Languages

Title: Academic Program Manager

Hometown: Honolulu, HI

Alma Mater(s): Clayton State University (B.S.) and Georgia State University (M.A.

Degree(s): BS in Communication and Media Studies; M.A. in Mass Communications

Q: What are some of your favorite activities and hobbies?

A: Being from Hawaii, my favorite activity is going to the beach with my family and friends. I also love watching movies, going hiking, and trying new restaurants with my partner and kids.

Q: What is the best part of your job?

A: My favorite part of my job is working with students! I genuinely enjoy speaking with the students, helping them discover final project ideas and planning their semesters. I also love learning about each student and hearing about their future goals and aspirations.

Q: Where is your favorite place on campus?

A: My office is located in the Swann building, so I’m located in the old main campus. I love the feel of the historic part of campus and enjoy the short walk from Swann building to the library, especially during the fall.

Q: Unique/exciting thing you bring to Georgia Tech?

A: The School of Modern Languages works with international students from all over the world, so I think I am able to connect with students from different geographic backgrounds because of the diversity in Hawaii. Hawaii is considered a melting pot, with individuals from everywhere, so I’ve grown up meeting people from different cultures and perspectives. This has taught me to be more open-minded, patient, and understanding when working with students from overseas.

Q: Anything else that you would like for the GTAAN Community to know about you and/or your role at Tech?

A: I am fairly new to GA Tech and joined the university in February 2022. I am excited to meet more people on campus and being part of the GA Tech Community!

Thanks for letting us shine the spotlight on you this month, Anastasia!

Recruiting GT 1000 First-Year Seminar & GT 2000 Transfer Student Seminar Instructors and Student Team Leaders

Greetings! We are currently accepting applications for both instructors and student team leaders to teach GT 1000 or GT 2000 this fall semester. The seminars are an excellent way to help our incoming students get connected to people and resources here at Georgia Tech and for them to do some intentional exploration of their degree and career pathways, while cultivating leadership skills. Please consider applying to join the teaching team and referring others you think would be a good fit.

The Fall 2023 application is open here: https://gatech.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e2pgfk5eTFSc0zs

We ask that you complete your application on or preferably before March 17, 2023 for full consideration.

In addition, if you have students who either have served in the past or would be good candidates to serve as a Team Leader this year, please encourage them to apply.

GT 1000 and GT 2000, Georgia Tech’s first-year and transfer student seminar courses, introduce new students to campus and support their successful transition to college. All sections utilize successful, experienced students as peer facilitators, referred to as “Team Leaders” (TLs). Team Leaders work closely with the instructor to promote small group interaction and offer advice and support to first-year and transfer students. TLs are volunteers, receiving no pay or academic credit. All students are eligible to apply, even if they haven’t participated in the program as a GT-1000/2000 student.

Former TLs and new applicants should apply here: https://gatech.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3rvrSJeoCczbBI

The deadline for TL applications is March 3, 2023.

Thank you for considering these teaching and team leader recruiting opportunities. Should you have any questions about the program or the application process, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] . You can also learn more at our website: https://transitionseminars.oue.gatech.edu/

All the best,

Education Abroad Barriers Survey

Education abroad programs are a great opportunity for students to engage globally and grow both professionally and personally through international experiences. We're encouraging students to participate in a diversity survey about education abroad. Your participation will play a crucial role in ensuring that these programs are inclusive and accessible to all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of their identity. By taking the survey, you'll have the opportunity to share your experiences and perspectives and provide valuable feedback to those who design and run these programs.

We understand that filling out surveys can be time-consuming, but we assure that your contribution will make a real difference. This survey is completely confidential, and your responses will be used only to inform and improve education abroad programs. At the end of the survey, you will have the option to express interest in participating in a focus group. This will be a chance to share your feedback directly with us in a face-to-face setting. So, whether or not you've participated in an education abroad program or if you're considering doing so in the future, we encourage you to take a few minutes to fill out the survey. Your voice matters, and your participation will help to create better and more inclusive international opportunities for GT students.

GA Tech Honor Advisory Council

The Georgia Tech Honor Advisory Council is looking to recruit new undergraduate advisors. Our mission is to promote the honor code and academic integrity around campus. Officers work on advising small groups, presenting ethics seminars, and hosting fun events (games, goody-bag giveaways, arts & crafts). This organization is a great way to build leadership skills, build connections on campus, and volunteer at local nonprofits. I’ve linked some resources to learn more below. We will review applications on a rolling basis.

New Tutoring Option for CoE Students

We are pleased to share a new tutoring option for engineering students this semester. TAS has partnered with Knack, an app-based tutoring platform, to deliver peer tutoring for engineering courses. Please help us promote this option to your students! Tutoring is free, online, and can be scheduled at the convenience of the student + tutor. Students can sign up to be a tutor for courses in which they have earned an A at Tech, and completely manage their work hours. This provides much more flexibility than a current tutor position with TAS, and we hope it allows us to offer more tutoring in engineering. If our spring pilot goes well, we will expand to the full campus course directory. Students can request a tutor or sign up to be a tutor at gatech.joinknack.com.

Advisors: Please share with students.

Pre-Law Information Portal

In the portal you will find resource guides on options to prepare for the LSAT, how to pursue financial aid, writing your personal statement, and obtaining letters of recommendation. You’ll also find databases of internship and scholarship opportunities (scholarship opportunities coming soon!). A huge thank you to LST Program Assistant Alysia Gray for all of her work on this incredible project. These resources require you to login with your GT credential for access.

Advisors: Please share with interested students.
