February Advisor Spotlight

Wes Kirkbride (He/Him/His)

Department: College of Computing, Undergraduate Advising

Title: Assistant Director of Academic Advising

Hometown: Fayetteville, NC

Alma Mater(s): University of West Georgia (BS & M.Ed.)

Degree(s): BS in Psychology (2007); M.Ed. in Guidance & Counseling (2014)

Q: What are some of your favorite activities and hobbies?

A: I love HIIT/strength training workouts, practicing yoga, biking the Atlanta BeltLine, traveling to new places, and spending time with my pup Skye. I also captain a kickball team on a local LGBTQ league (Stonewall Sports).

Q: What is the best part of your job?

A: Cross-collaboration with multiple departments on campus. I work with the Computational Media program, an undergrad degree shared with three colleges. This allows me to align with a diverse array of faculty/staff on curricular matters and creating solutions around advising/registration that best serve our CM student population.

Q: Where is your favorite place on campus?

A: The home office on my remote days? Kidding. I love exploring new/rehabilitated spaces on campus. I am especially a fan of the updated John Lewis Student Center area and how it has been modernized in an exceptional way.

Q: Unique/exciting thing you bring to Georgia Tech?

A: I have a background in psychology and counseling. This allows me to exemplify strong listening skills and empathy when addressing students’ questions/concerns. I have also been on campus for a while, so I bring a wealth of knowledge to the CM program as it relates to working with faculty and staff on various curricular matters.

Q: Anything else that you would like for the GTAAN Community to know about you and/or your role at Tech?

A: I am grateful for the skills and experience I have developed during my time at Georgia Tech. I truly cannot believe it will be ten years in May of this year. I am looking forward to what the future holds!

Thanks for letting us shine the spotlight on you this month, Wes!

GA Legislative Requirement Update

Updates On The Georgia Legislative Requirements Canvas Courses

The Office of Undergraduate Education, Office of the Registrar, and Canvas implementation team are working together to launch the Canvas courses for students who need to complete some/all of the Georgia Legislative Requirements (U.S. history, U.S. Constitution, GA history, GA Constitution). Following is some information and reminders about this process. If you ever have any general questions or inquires about specific students, please don't hesitate to email me and/or refer to the information in the Undergraduate Advising Canvas course.

  1. All students beginning May 1, 2022 or after must comply with the new GLR requirements. Summer 2022 transfer students ONLY were "grandfathered" in under the previous guidelines, where one class/AP credit for HIST 2111, HIST 2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUB 3000 fulfilled all four GLRs. Any summer transfer student who either BROUGHT IN CREDIT FOR ONE OF THESE CLASSES or TOOK ONE OF THESE CLASSES IN SUMMER 2022 will be considered to have fulfilled all four GLRs. Any summer transfer student who did not bring in credit or take a class in summer 2022 must abide by the new policy. All other students who started May 1, 2022 or after, including summer and fall first year students and fall transfer students (and all students thereafter), must follow the new policy.
  2. Information on the new policy is on the OUE website at https://oue.gatech.edu/glr-requirement and in the Catalog at https://catalog.gatech.edu/academics/undergraduate/core-curriculum/constitution-history/.
  3. If you have students who started at GT at any time before May 2022 who have taken one of the five "legislative classes" (HIST 2111, HIST 2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUB 3000) and who do not have all four GLRs fulfilled in their degree audit, please email me and we can get this updated for you.
  4. An informational video and Powerpoint presentation are available in the Canvas site for academic advisors. In addition, there is an Excel spreadsheet with every summer 2022 transfer student that documents whether they have all four GLRs fulfilled (i.e., they came in with HIST 2111/2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUBP 3000 credit or took the class in summer 2022) or whether they must still fulfill all four.
  5. GLRs will not show as fulfilled until the class is completed and the student has a passing grade (if fulfilled through a regular class) or until they have completed the required exam via Canvas and end-of-term processing has happened. For example, a student who completes the Georgia history Canvas class in September will be unenrolled from the Canvas class and GLR updated in Degreeworks after end of term processing in December.
  6. There were some issues with the fall 2022 and spring 2023 transfer student cohort from some USG schools. Many of these students have fulfilled either the Georgia history or Georgia Constitution GLR but they are not marked as completed in degree audits. The registrar is actively working to rectify this, and they will all be updated before the Canvas courses "go live" in March.
  7. The Canvas courses are scheduled to go live, i.e., show up in your students' Canvas dashboards, by the end of spring break in March. There will be about 5,000 enrolled students, including:
  • summer transfer students who did not have any of the classes needed to be grandfathered into the old policy (see the Excel spreadsheet in Canvas),
  • fall transfer students,
  • spring transfer students,
  • summer first year students,
  • fall first year students, and
  • spring first year students (we have a tiny number of these, mostly those who deferred admission from the fall semester)
